The evaluation of mean platelet volume, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and platelet lymphocyte ratio in case of acute exacerbation period in patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis

The Evaluation of Mean Platelet Volume, Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio in case of Acute Exacerbation Period in patients diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease with high mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to investigate the mean platelet volume (MPV), Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) during the acute exacerbation period and to evaluate the relationship between these parameters and acute exacerbation period. In this study; the demographic characteristics and laboratory parameters of the patients diagnosed as CF in the Pediatric Chest Diseases Unit of Dicle University between the years 2009-2019 were evaluated retrospectively. The study group consisted of 92 patients with CF and the control group consisted of 96 age and sex matched healthy children. Working group were divided into two subgroups as isolated (Group-1) and non-isolated (Group-2) throat or blood culture microorganisms. Age, body mass index (BMI), age at diagnosis, follow-up, number of hospitalizations due to acute exacerbation, duration of hospitalization, Hemoglobin (Hgb), Hematocrit (Htc), Mean erythrocyte volume (MCV), White blood cell count (WBC), Neutrophil Lymphocyte count, NLR, Platelet count, MPV, PLR, C Reactive Protein (CRP), Throat culture and Blood culture results were recorded. In this study, there were 41 (44,6%) female, 51 (55,4%) male 92 CF patients, 43 (44,8%) female, 53 (55,2%) male total 96 healthy children. The mean age was 78,5 ± 53,9 months in the study group and 92,7 ± 61,3 months in the control group. In the study group, Hgb, Hct, MPV were lower, WBC, Neutrophil count, Lymphocyte count, Platelet count, NLR values were higher (p<0,05). There was no significant difference in PLR and MCV values between the groups. When comparing the hemogram parameters of Group-1 and Group-2, NLR value was significantly higher in Group-1 (p<0,05). In this study accommodate to reported in the previous literature; that MPV and NLR, which are known to be inflammation markers, may be useful in predicting the onset of acute exacerbations in CF patients.
