The investigation of interventions born of modern infrastructure installation after restoration of cultural assets need to be protected and grading the value of structures

In this research, interventions on cultural properties in need of protection made after restorations were identified to have implementation and protection problems caused by modern infrastructure systems installations. Incorrect electrical and mechanical implementations are identified that were caused by architects insufficient coordination in preparation of electrical and mechanical installations, insufficient experience in electromechanical implementations in worksites, thinking of electromechanical works as out of architecture discipline and electrical and mechanical engineers insufficient expertise in restoration. Modern infrastructure implementations are evaluated according to basic restoration principles even if they comply with electrical and mechanical engineering norms. This thesis consists of six main sections. Section one includes introduction, purpose of the study, the term cultural property in need of protection, history of the term protection, and legal approaches on protection in Turkey and abroad. Additionally, classification of cultural properties in need of protection and values in these properties with scale of intervention, approaches and principles of intervention are explained. Modern electrical and mechanical systems used in cultural properties in need of protection, classification and grading methods are reported. Section two includes references used for the study. Section three presents civilian, military and religous buildings that will be examined in Diyarbakır and specifies the methodology of the study. Section four includes examination of the interventions made due to installation of modern infrastructural systems in groups of monuments in various areas of Diyarbakır and rating of use values and monumental values of buildings. Final section proposes solutions for project makers and practitioners about aplications in interventions on examined monument groups with the help of obtained results.
