The relationship between serum asprosin levels and cardiovascular risk factors in chronic renal failure patients

Aim. It was aimed to determine serum asprosin levels in stage 3 and 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases and healthy individuals and to investigate the relationship between this parameter and cardiovascular risk factors. Method. In our study, serum/plasma samples obtained from blood samples taken for routine laboratory request were used. A total of 91 individuals were included in our study. Of these individuals, 37 were healthy controls, 34 patients with stage 3 CKD, and 20 patients with stage 4 CKD. Biochemical measurements were carried out from serums obtained from healthy and CKD individuals. Serum asprosin levels were determined by ELISA method. Pulse wave velocity, augmentation index, central aortic systolic (cASBP) and diastolic blood pressures (cADBP) were measured by Mobil-O-Graph (I.E.M. GmbH, Stolberg, Germany). Statistical analysis was performed using the SSPS 14.0 program. Results. Of the 54 CKD patients, 37% were type 2 diabetic (n=20), and 63% were non-diabetic CKD patients (n=34). The highest serum asprosin value was found in stage 4 CKD patients, and the lowest in healthy control patients. In the linear regression analysis, eGFR and asprosin were found among the independent predictors of proteinuria in the non-diabetic CKD group. In the diabetic CKD group, asprosin and pulse rate were found among the predictors of the augmentation index. Conclusion. Serum asprosin levels may play a role in the development of proteinuria in non-diabetic CKD patients and the deterioration of arterial elasticity in diabetic CKD patients.
