Abstract (EN)
AIMThe aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of smoking to the systemic and local total antioxidant capacity (TAOC), total oxidative status (TOS), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and oxidative stress index (OSI) in patients with chronic periodontitis.MATERIAL AND METHODS72 chronic periodontitis patients [38 smokers (S +P+), 34 non-smokers (S-P+)] and 54 periodontally healthy individuals [28 smokers (S+P-), 26 non-smokers (S-P-, control)] were included in the study. Following clinical measurements and samples; cotinine, TAOC, TOS and MDA levels were determined. OSI was calculated by the formula ?[(TOS/TAOC) x100]? and the obtained data were analyzed staistically.FINDINGSIn smoking and periodontitis reduction in serum and salivary TAOC levels and increase in TOS, MDA levels and OSI were determined. The lowest TAOC and the highest TOS, MDA levels and OSI were seen in S+P+ group whereas the highest TAOC and the lowest TOS, MDA levels and OSI were observed in controls (p <0.05). In oxidative stress analysis the systemic and local effect of smoking seemed more evident compared to periodontitis but no statistically significant difference were found between smoking (S+P-) and periodontitis (S-P+) groups. In all groups, significant positive and negative correlations between clinical parameters and oxidative stress parameters were determined (p <0.05).DISCUSSIONSmoking and/or chronic periodontitis table decreases systemic and local TAOC while increasing TOS, MDA and OSI. The findings of our study show that smoking is at least as effective as periodontitis in systemic and local oxidative stress parameters and smoking-related oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathology of periodontitis.Key Words: Chronic Periodontitis, Smoking, Total Antioxidant Capacity, Total Oxidative Status, Malondialdehyde, Oxidative Stress Index, Cotinine.
