The investigation of high school biology textbooks according to 21.century skills

In this research, it has been tried to determine how much 21st century skills are included in the high school biology textbooks taught in the 2022-2023 academic year. 21st century skills in study; ways of thinking, ways of working, tools of work and integration to the world are discussed in terms of skill areas and their sub-dimensions. Qualitative research method was used in the study. The analysis units determined in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade high school biology textbooks taught in the 2022-2023 academic year were selected by purposive sampling method. The data collected by the document analysis method were analyzed with the descriptive analysis method. In the analysis of data; ways of thinking skill area sub-dimensions, ways of working skill area sub-dimensions, working tools skill area sub-dimensions and integration to the world sub-dimensions of skill area were used as analysis codes. According to the evaluations, it was seen that the units of analysis related to the thinking paths skill area in the high school biology textbooks were more than the other skill areas. However, while the number of problem-solving skills that require high-level thinking skills in this skill area is quite low, the number of critical thinking skills, which are thought to be a reflection of the research-inquiry approach, is higher. According to the evaluations, it was determined that the units of analysis that were determined to be related to the integration skill area in high school biology textbooks were less than the other skill areas. In some units in the textbooks, it is seen that the sub-dimensions of the integration to the world skill area are not encountered at all. It is thought that it is necessary to increase the number of successful activities, since they reflect more than one skill area at the same time in the high school biology textbook.
