Architectural protection and refunctioning concept,Konak Pier example

Today, developed countries regard the protecting the structures which accepted as a cultural heritage and represents the past life and architectural technology, as a necessity. "The Protection" concept was developed in the course of time and converted to another occupation involving the different occupational area of specialization from single structure scale to urban texture scale. The contemporary concept of "Protection" envisages the transfer of structures that are considered to be cultural objects to future generations as originally as possible, while preserving all architectural, technological and artistic pieces. The living conditions and technological progress in time was constituted the unsustainability of the original function of many cultural properties and abandonment of the structures. Along with this, while keeping the buildings protected, social activities are allotted and living is one of the main targets. In this case, restorations of structures that lose their original functions are also among the most important problems of protection-restoration works. Today, there are many functionless and idle archeological and historical structures in our country. There are much early period industrial structures belong to 19th century and also public structure within this building inventory. It has seen that some of these structures have repaired and assigned for the universities, schools, museums and Shopping Center in the last years. The number of scientific studies on this subject is extremely low and inadequate. In order to examine the applications of re-functioning in the direction of the above reasons, within this thesis study, French Customs buildings "Structure Group", which established in the Ottoman period and known as Konak Pier A.V.M. in our day are approached. This submitted study is consisting from five parts. First Part includes the architectural protection and necessity generally; Second Part includes historical development and architectural analysis of Konak Pier Structure Group; Third Part includes analyses of physical interventions towards to Structure Group; Fourth Part includes re-functioning studies and evaluation of the effect of applied interventions on the Structure Group. In the last Part, the results of the re-functioning studies and recommendations for the possible applications in the future are given.
