Relationship between problem solving skills and psychiatric symptoms in patients experiencing miocardial infarction

This is a descriptive and study to establish the relationship between, problem solving sklills and psychiatric symptoms in patients who have experienced myocardial infarction. The study was performed in patients followed up in Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital Cardiology Polyclinic due to MI. "Individual Identification Form", "Brief Symptom Inventory", "Problem Solving Inventory" were used as data collection tool in the study. Analysis of the data was conducted by using frequency, t-test, Anova, kruskall wallis and correlation analysis in SPSS. Psychiatric symptoms mostly seen patients after MI are reported to be, somatization (7.0±5.1), anxiety (5.1±4.2), hostility (5.7±3.8), depression (10.6±7.1). Problem solving incapability is detected to be prominent in the areas of impulsive style (39.4±9.4), problem-solving confidence (23.5±6.4), reflective style (13.8±6.1), planfulness (9.4±3.2), avoidant style (18.4±6.4). In addition, it was found that a positively significant relationship was present between somatization and hasty approach and self-confident approach; a negatively significant relationship was present between depression and evaluative approach and positive relationship between self- confident approach; negative relationship was present between interpersonal sensitivity and evaluative approach; a negatively significant relationship was present between hostility and evaluative approach (p<0.05). In the study it was determined that a significant relationship was present between problem solving skills and psychiatric symtoms of the patients. Investigation of patients in respect to problem solving skills after myocardical infarction and accompanying psychiatric symptoms are issues that have to be considered.
