The transformation of nationalism and nation state from modernity to globalization

The subjects of the study are the emergence of "nationalism" and "nation state" with the modernity and the transformation of these two phenomena with Globalization. The view accepted in the social sciences is that the foundations of the "nation state" emerged in Western Europe immediately after the Middle Ages; that the economic, political and social changes that we call modernity constitute the nation state, and that the "nationalism" movements have first influenced Europe and then the whole World. As a result of the change, nation state and nationalism merged human communities around the political and social organization of which borders are defined. The spiritual bond that will keep this organization alive is the basic elements of nationalism; a common history, a common homeland, a common language and a common culture of religion and ethnicity. Although these elements had long maintained the task of creating and maintaining common consciousness; the "ethnic revival" that arose from the 1960s, started to question "nationalism" and the views of nationalism in society. With this questioning, the idea of a "monoculture society" which based on the homogeneity of national identity has been the object of criticism. Progress in the field of "human rights" has put pressure on "nationsocieties" to have a "pluralistic" understanding that respects "multiculturalism". This situation has increased with the effect of "globalization" process. On the other hand, in the process of globalization, there has been an increase in nationalist movements all over the world. In this context, the main objective of our study is to reveal how nationalism and nation state first emerged in "modernity" and then undergo a transformation under the conditions created by "globalization".
