Abstract (EN)

Aim: To investigate the effect of iron deficiency anemia treatment on dipper blood pressure pattern and non-dipper blood pressure pattern, which is a cardiovascular risk marker, in normotensive premenopausal women Materials and methods: 37 iron deficiency anemia patients without any other chronic disease and 35 healthy control volunteers were inculded in our study. Routine biochemical and ambulatory blood pressure parameters of patients with iron deficiency anemia before and after treatment and also between healthy control group and patients with iron deficiency anemia were compared. Results: In patients group before and after iron treatment there were no significant difference on dipper and non-dipper blood pressure patterns. In our study the nighttime systolic blood pressure after treatment of iron deficiency anemia was significantly lower. Also daytime and 24 hours mean systolic blood pressure values tended to decrease after treatment. In healthy group the systolic blood pressure values also tended to be lower than patiens before anemia treatment. After treatment ALT, direct bilirubin, triglyceride, serum iron, TSH, ferritin, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, RDW levels were significantly higher, total iron binding capacity and platelet count were significantly lower compared with patients before treatment. In comparison of healthy control group and patients before treatment there were no significant difference between dipper and non-dipper blood pressure patterns and also between other ambulatory blood pressure values. In healthy control group serum iron, ferritin, hemoglobin, hematocrit and MCV levels were significantly higher, total iron binding capacity, RDW and platelet count were significantly lower compared with patients before treatment. Conclusion: Considering that an increase in nighttime systolic blood pressure may cause non-dipper blood pressure pattern, which is a cardiovascular risk marker, it can be thought that decrease in nighttime systolic blood pressure is very importatnt in terms of reducing the cardiovascular risk after iron deficiency anemia treatment.
