The criticism of modernity as A literary manner in the novel of Oguz Atay's "Tutunamayanlar"

With the emergence of the "novel" genre, the daily life which is entegrated to the story provides evaluation and interpretation of the life from different perspectives. The history of this kind of micro narration from classicism to postmodernism shows the replacement of the novel with mythic narration which tells the world with a manner of magical wholeness. This actually becomes a situation proceeding from general to particular and expresses different aspects of human life. In this study dealed with the book of Oğuz Atay's "Tutunamayanlar" (The Disconnected) aims to show the critical attitude towards the local problems of the concept of "modernity" which originally comes from the "West". These main criticisims are classified as four main titles and expounded accordingly to them. These main titles which indicate social, ideological, individual and intellectual fields are evaluated through the ideas of the nineteenth century's philosophers which is the period of the emergence of "the criticism of modernity". At this point, we refer to Karl Marx's thoughts on economic and social context, Friedrich Nietzsche's ideas on individual transformation and Thedor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer's evaluations on cultural and social degeneration. The conclusion of this study is that "Tutunamayanlar" (The Disconnected) is an unorthodox "period novel" either with mention about malfunction of state order or with the depression atmosphere of social stereotypes and critical attitude.
