The mediating role of social justice in the effect of quality of school lifeon social alienation

This study is quantitative research examining whether social justice plays a mediating role in the effect of high school students' quality of school life on school alienation. The research was conducted using the relational survey model, one of the general survey models. A total of 899 scales were applied to 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students studying in Anatolian high schools, vocational high schools, imam hatip high schools and fine arts high school in Düzce province. "Personal Information Form", "School Quality of Life Scale", "Social Justice in Schools Scale" and "School Alienation Scale" were used to collect the data. As a consequence of this study, it was determined that students' perceptions of school quality of life, alienation from school, and social justice in schools were at a medium level. In the findings related to the difference tests, while no significant differences were found according to gender, mother's education level, father's education level, 9th grade students' perceptions of school quality of life were found to be higher when analysed according to grade level. When analysed according to school type, it was found that Fine Arts High School students' perceptions of school quality of life were higher than other high school types. According to the findings obtained from the scale of social justice in schools, no significant difference was found for gender, mother's education level and father's education level perception of social justice. Considering the grade level, the social justice perceptions of 12th grade students differed significantly from those of 10th grade students, and the social justice perceptions of 9th grade students differed significantly from 10th grade students. According to the school type, the social justice perceptions of Fine Arts High School students were higher than those of vocational high school students. When the results of the alienation from school scale were analysed according to gender, it was found that the arithmetic mean of male students' "Powerlessness", one of the sub-dimensions of alienation from school, was higher than that of female students; that is, male students perceived more "powerlessness" and female students experienced more "social distance" in the "Social Distance" sub-dimension. According to the grade level, 12th, 11th, and 10th grade students' perceptions of alienation from school were higher than 9th grade students. According to the school type, the perceptions of alienation from the Anatolian High School, Imam Hatip High School and Fine Arts High School students were higher than those of Vocational High School students. While there was no significant difference according to father's education level, it was found that students whose mothers graduated from undergraduate school perceived more alienation than students whose mothers graduated from secondary school. Regarding the third sub-problem and the mediating role, which is the purpose of the research, a positive, moderately significant relationship was found between school quality of life and social justice in schools. A negative, moderate, significant relationship was found between the quality of school life and alienation from school. Because of regression analyses, a positive, moderate, significant relationship was found between school quality of life and social justice in schools.
