Character analysis, plot in Ömer Faruk Toprak's Tuz ve Ekmek novel and the themes and plots in his stories

In this study, the plot of the novel ''Tuz ve Ekmek'' and the other stories of Ömer Faruk Toprak are examined. The main characters are anaylized according to their importance in the plot. In addition to this, the themes of Ömer Faruk Toprak's stories, the life of him, his story telling are studied by giving information about his works and the novel of Tuz ve Ekmek. Ömer Faruk Toprak, who is one of the authors in Turkish literature living in a period which is called as the Generation of 1940 and who produces works with a socialist-realistic understanding, adopts a socialist world view in his novels and stories like the other artists of this generation. He focuses on social issues. The authoritarian manners of government on the intellectuals during the years, exiles, detentions, the closure of publication organs, leave deep traces in the memories of authors childhood and youth. Besides, having a critical approach about the government in the period of the Second World War, the author is influenced by all of these issues and composes his works under these effects of the era. The plot of the events in the fiction and the characters in the novel are also selected in consideration of this The author selects his characters among the revolutionist, enlightened people, writers, poets and patriotic university students living in Istanbul and who are affected by martial law during the Second World War. The protagonist in his stories is usually the author himself. In addition to this, the characters of his stories show similar features to the people in his novel like the people with whom he spend his childhood and youth. The themes in his stories give clues about the life and social and economic conditions of that period.
