Abstract (EN)
The art of costume which started with the Ancient Greek Theater is important in order to shed light on the period in which the play took place and to reflect its character traits in the stage of arts exhibited until today. Costume on stage; achieves a holistic effect with the decor and the performance of the performer and thus it is possible to present an ambiance to the audience. In terms of costumes, the musical named "The Phantom of the Opera" which was released in 1986 brings on the stage quite spectacular works. It is seen that the costumes designed by Maria Björnson have preserved the continuity of certain pieces since the day they were first exhibited and the patterns and fabrics reflecting the clothing of the 19th century period also bear the characteristics of the models reflecting the craftsmanship of the period. These costumes, which are obtained by using very old fabric and sewing techniques and the repairs applied on them can be explained with the concept of clothing restoration within the subject of textile techniques. The restoration which started in the 19th century and can be applied in many areas, especially in architecture, can now be applied to fabric surfaces and clothing and provides valuable old clothes to reach today with material-specific repair and protection activities. It is aimed to explain the materials and techniques in terms of the costume-restoration relationship by examining the costumes of the musical "The Phantom of the Opera", which shows that the clothing restoration can continue for many years. In the second part of the study, the definition of restoration is made and in the third part of the study, the main material of the garment's preservation and repair techniques for the textiles which are using today are explained. Causes of deterioration in textile products and repair applications are explained. In the fourth part, the process steps of clothing restoration, regional repairs, mold, dye and motif repairs are explained with examples. In the fifth part of the study, the points to be considered during the production of costume design in performing arts are emphasized. In the last part of the study, the costumes of the "The Phantom of the Opera" musical which we can show as an example of clothing restoration and the clothing fashion reflected by the characteristics of the period are examined. In the thesis, using the interview technique, methods of preserving and restoring the costume designs exhibited in the musical were reached, the literature in the field was examined and presented with visual support.
