Gender roles in the proposed storybooks for secondary school students

The aim of this study is to examine the storybooks recommended for secondary school students in terms of gender roles and expressions. The data source of the study constitute the story boks belonging to Turkish writers in the list of 100 Basic Writings organized by the ministry. Three stories are randomly selected from the seven story books identified in this list. The data obtained through document review are analyzed by content analysis. In the study, the subject of gender is examined in accordance with the subtitles of "Sexes of the main heroes", "Sexes of other heroes", "The authors' gender distributions", "The roles of heroes in social life and the tasks attributed to genders", "Expressions that discriminate the sexes in the stories". As a result of the study, it is concluded that the most of the heroes and all of the authors are men, women are more associated with domestic roles while men are associated with outside works, gender-discriminating expressions are used in the books and that the books are not suitable for the recommended age group and students should be ensured to read the studied books correctly.
