A research on secondary school students' problems related to lıstenıng skılls

The purpose of this study is to identify listening issues of middle-school students and sources of these issues and to determine solution offers of teachers for the problems with perspectives of teachers and students. Within the scope of this purpose, qualitative research is used for collecting data profoundly. Semi-structured interview is chosen among the collecting data techniques as a method. This study group is formed by 10 Turkish teachers who are working in 5 middle – schools in Tuşba and İpekyolu which are districts of Van and 10 students of those teachers. Due to the fact that experience is thought substantial while forming the study group, the condition of three-year or more experienced teachers is considered. Content analysis is used in the analysis of datas collected through the interviews. Coder reliability is applied for analysis reliability. Results of the study are composed of titles that are listening issues and its sources, teachers' ways of solutions for listening issues, teachers' suggestions for listening issues and listening issues according to students' views. According to the results of the research, listening issues of middle-school students is presented genereally. By the perspectives of teachers, listening problems are caused by family, environment, preparedness, speaker, listener, lack of education and topic. The teachers state how they solve these issues and come up detailed suggestions for them. Teachers' solution ways and suggestions are submitted in the frame of aspects that is stated in source of listening problems. Listening issues and the perspectives of students about these issues' source are come up in the themes of family, environment, preparedness, listener and listening material. It is found out that different and same aspects in the views of students and teachers about listening issues and their sources. Results of the study are discussed within the other researches in literature.
