Determination of the concept errors of secondary school eighth grade students about themal numbers and rooted numbers

With the introduction of humanity into the Information Age of the 21st century, scientific and technological developments have progressed rapidly in every field and this has led to an increase in the need for mathematics. This necessity has necessitated an effective mathematics education. The misconceptions must be determined. The students have misconceptions in many subjects. Especially, it is very important to determine misconceptions about exponential numbers and rooted numbers which are found in many educational level curricula and which constitute a background for many subjects. The aim of this study is to investigate the misconceptions of the secondary school eighth grade students about exponential numbers and rooted numbers. The research is a qualitative research and it is a descriptive study based on the general survey model. The study was conducted in a randomly selected middle school in Elazığ province in 2017/2018 academic year. The data were collected by using the diagnostic test in the form of semi-structured interview form consisting of four open-ended questions. The answers of the students to the diagnostic test were examined separately and "true", "wrong" and " Empty categories were evaluated and percentage distributions were determined according to these categories. la were transferred to computer and presented in the findings. With this research, it is seen that the students have the misconceptions of the exponential numbers in some target points such as "Integer calculates the whole number forces" Understand the basic rules about exponential expressions. Recognizes real numbers, associates with rational and irrational numbers" and "Makes addition and subtraction operations in square rooted expressions". It should not be forgotten that students may fall into misconceptions in teaching the target points of exponential numbers and radical numbers and in this context, full learning should be realized.
