Prediagnostic evaluation of thyroid cancer in individuals with autoimmune thyroid disease

Considering the incidence of thyroid gland and its diseases, which are very important for endocrine surgery, we understand that it is more important in research. Although thyroid malignancies are the most common endocrine malignancy, an important data that should not be ignored is the fact that thyroid malignancies are the ninth most mortal malignancy. Another issue that studies have focused on is the effects of autoimmune thyroid diseases on malignancy. In our thesis study focusing on this subject, we aimed to contribute to science by analyzing the data of 258 patients who underwent thyroidectomy between 2018 and 2022 in Adnan Menderes University General Surgery Department Clinic. While interpreting the data for the hypothesis of more rigid scoring of TIRADS scoring in individuals with autoimmune thyroid disease or making more aggressive decisions than its score suggests, we interpret the frequency of malignancy in postoperative definitive pathology in individuals with autoimmune thyroid disease. In the literature, there are many data suggesting that malignancy is more frequent in individuals with autoimmune thyroid disease, but there are also many data suggesting that this does not make a significant difference. Our study showed that having autoimmune thyroid disease did not statistically make a difference in terms of malignancy risk. Although we also found the malignancy risk of the nodule evaluated by TIRADS scoring to be statistically significant; we did not find the hypothesis that it is necessary to be more rigorous about TIRADS in individuals with autoimmune disease to be significant.
