Abstract (EN)

Paul Hindemith's Horn Concerto, composed in 1949 for Dennis Brain, one of the best horn players of his time, is among the most remarkable compositions in the 20th century for its compositional form among horn works. Due to its technical and musical challenges, which enhance horn performers in various aspects, it holds an important place among the works that should be studied in the horn repertoire. The first part of the study provides information about Hindemith's life, the music culture of his era, and the composer's musical style. It gives an account of the Gebrauchsmusik (utility or functional music) movement, for which the composer is considered a pioneer, rejecting atonal music. By researching the Sonata for Horn and Piano, Althorn Sonata for Horn and Piano, and Sonata for Four Horns, written by the composer for the horn, brief information about the works is provided. In the second part of the text, the music analysis of the Horn Concerto, which is the subject of the study, is conducted. The purpose of this analysis is to assist horn performers in comprehending the work in more detail and to help them in adopting the composer's musical style and language. In the third part of the text, the recordings of Paul Hindemith's Horn Concerto by Dennis Brain (1921-1957), Marie Luise Neunecker (1955-...), and Louis-Philippe Marsolais (1978-...) are examined, and their performances are compared in terms of technical and musical aspects. Based on this comparison, differences in breathing, articulation, and tempo among performers are highlighted, aiming to assist horn performers and students who will interpret this piece. The fourth and final part of the text presents study methods that are considered helpful for those who will perform the Horn Concerto. This section includes interval practice, air usage and conditioning, gestopft practice, articulation, and nuance exercises. Undoubtedly, correct breath usage is one of the most important factors that affect performance in wind instruments. In addition, the high and sustained phrases in Hindemith's Horn Concerto can pose challenges for performers in terms of conditioning. Therefore, it is believed that following the recommended study methods correctly and regularly will prepare performers for this piece. Due to the scarcity of Turkish resources regarding Paul Hindemith's Horn Concerto, this text has been prepared as a guide to assist horn performers, educators, and horn students.
