In the novels of Peyami Safa otherness in the framework of east-west dichotomy

With globalization, the interaction of cultures with each other increases and the concept of the other appears in every aspect of life. Analyzing the novels to examine from what angles and in what kind of background context these interactions affect; It will help to make sense of the relationships between "self and the other", which is a fundamental issue. The concept of the other; It forms the basis of the narrative. The narrative usually arises from a conflict, and this conflict emerges more clearly with the presence of a stranger. The need for an "other" to recognize oneself in the formation of one's self-image indicates a process of identity construction. This process points to a whole both individually and socially with its political and historical background. In Peyami Safa's novels, the concept of the other appears on the axis of the East-West dichotomy. This duality; It shows its effect on the axis of man and woman, within the framework of matter-meaning duality, in the context of national and religious identity, on the axis of modernization and in the structural elements of the novel, especially in the use of space. In Peyami Safa's novels, the relationship between self and other has an important place in the context of the Westernization paradox. Modernization processes and nation-building policies in the early republic period lead to an identity crisis, and this crisis can be followed through novels. Peyami Safa's novels provide very convenient material to explain this crisis through the concept of the other. In addition, examining the analysis of relations with the other within the framework of narratology emerges as a functional method. As a result, the relations with the other, which appear as a conflict in the texts, form the basis of the narrative. In this study, Peyami Safa's Sözde Kızlar, Fatih Harbiye, Bir Tereddüdün Romanı, Matmazel Noraliya'nın Koltuğu, Yalnızız named his novel's have been studied in this sense.
