Effect of premature birth on developmental hip dysplasia

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the most common musculoskeletal anomaly of childhood; if left undetected and untreated, it can lead to permanent deformities and arthrosis in the patient; it also causes loss of work force and a decrease in the patient's quality of life. The most important factor determining the success of treatment is early diagnosis. If it is treated in the first months of life, it is possible to heal without sequelae, but in delayed cases, serious difficulties are encountered in the treatment and sequelae remain. Today, ultrasonography is the most commonly used radiological method in the diagnosis and follow-up of DDH, and dysplasias that cannot be detected by physical examination and conventional radiography in the early period have become detectable by US. Anteroposterior radiographs are primary for diagnosis in infants older than six months. The effect of premature (preterm) births on DDH is controversial. Although there are studies suggesting that preterm birth is a risk factor for DDH, there are also studies suggesting that it has no effect. The aim of our study was to contribute to science by comparing the effect of premature birth on developmental dysplasia of the hip in babies screened by ultrasonography between January 2021 and December 2021 with the current literature. In conclusion; It was observed that preterm birth was not a risk factor for developmental hip dysplasia.
