Relationships between psychological birth order, perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty, and interpersonal sensitivity

The aim is to examine the relationships between psychological birth order, perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty and interpersonal sensitivity. The sample of the study consists of a total of 610 students, 366 women and 244 men. Personal Information Form, White-Campbell Psychological Birth Order Inventory, APS Perfectionism Scale, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (BTÖ-12), Interpersonal Sensitivity Scale were applied. Descriptive statistical methods, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson product - moment correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used for the analysis. Oldest child with perfectionism and maladaptive perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty and its sub-dimensions, low self-esteem, and unassertive interpersonal behavior from the sub-dimensions of interpersonal sensitivity were positively; middle and only child with perfectionism and maladaptive perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty and sub-dimensions, interpersonal sensitivity and sub-dimensions were positively associated. Youngest child was negatively associated with maladaptive perfectionism and low self-esteem. As a result of the regression analysis, oldest child had an explanatory effect on perfectionism, adaptive perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty and its sub-dimensions, low self-esteem and unassertive interpersonal behavior. Middle child had an explanatory effect on perfectionism, maladaptive perfectionism, intolerance to uncertainty and its sub-dimensions, interpersonal sensitivity and interpersonal worry and dependence, low self-esteem. Youngest child had an explanatory effect only on prospective anxiety, sub-dimensions of intolerance of uncertainty. Only child had an explanatory effect on intolerance of uncertainty and its sub-dimensions, interpersonal sensitivity, interpersonal worry and dependence. Besides, actual birth order and the psychological birth order were not found the same. The results of the study were discussed within the scope of the relevant literature, and the results and recommendations were presented.
