Sabuhi Ahmed Dede's commentary on masnevi titled İhtiyarat-i Sabuhi (Volume I.-III.) (analysis-critical text-glossary)

Sabuhi Ahmed Dede is an important Mevlevi sheikh who lived in the late 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, and also has the characteristics of a poet. After passing the education in Konya Mevlevihane, he performed the duty of sheikh first in Damascus and then in Yenikapı Mevlevihane. He wrote Turkish Divan in Konya years and İhtiyarat-ı Sabuhi in Damascus years. İhtiyârât-ı Sabuhi seems to be a work that has attracted the attention of the scientific world in recent years. However, a fully transcribed text of the work has not been prepared so far. This study focuses on the work rather than giving detailed information about Sabuhi Ahmed Dede's life and literary personality. The copies of İhtiyarat-ı Sabuhi were identified and procured, and the genealogy of the copies was drawn, and a critical text was created with the prominent copies among them. Sabûhî Ahmed Dede has commented on the couplets that are difficult to understand and the couplets containing verses and hadiths in İhtiyarat-ı Sabuhi, as well as the dîbâce sections of the Mesnevi. In his commentary methodology, in accordance with this explanation, verses and hadith quotations and religious anecdotes were intensely included. In the commentary of the dîbâce sections of Mesnevi, the meanings of words and grammatical explanations are concentrated. Although the work was written in Turkish, Persian was used extensively in the verse sections and Arabic was used extensively in the quoted sections. Even though it was written to teach Mesnevi, the density of Arabic and Persian words and compositions in the Turkish sections shows that the students are at a certain level of education. In addition, the lack of order in the commentary method, the meaning of words from the couplets in the Mesnevi that are not annotated, the abundance of use of conjunctions, the incompleteness of sentences in some places or the absence of meaningful sentences indicate that the work was written with colloquial features. İhtiyarat-ı Sabuhi draws attention as a work that has a different place and importance among the Mesnevi commentaries within the commentary tradition, with especially the couplets containing verses and hadiths, include the commentary of the couplets that are thought not to be understood by the students and the originality of the commentary method used to achieve this purpose, unpretentious style, use of language that requires a certain level of education.
