Abstract (EN)

Colorectal cancer, which is one of the most common cancer types in the world and country, is the most common gastrointestinal cancer. Depending on whether the tumor tissue is in the right or left colon, its frequency, clinical features, course, and treatment method may vary. This is due to the differences in histology, and anatomy. Morphology, and genetic structure of the right and left colons. In our study, we examined the expressions of CMTM3 and SSTR2 genes with the thought that they may play important roles in tumor development and progression in tumoral tissues located in the right-sided and left-sided colon. Our sample; consisted of 89 tumor tissue samples, 42 of which were right-sided colon and 47 left-sided colon, which were diagnosed histopathologically in Mersin University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pathology, and healthy tissue samples of the same individuals adjacent to the tumor tissue. Our work; was performed on archival materials embedded in a paraffin block prepared from tissues with adenocarcinoma, the most common type of colorectal cancer. Before the RNA isolation from the tissue samples, cDNA synthesis was performed. Expression of CMTM3 and SSTR2 genes were analyzed in Real-Time PCR by comparative CT (ΔΔCT) method. Statistical evaluation of the results was done with the Wilcoxon T-test, Student's T-test, and Mann-Whitney U-test. Colorectal cancer is more common in males than females (p<0.05). The expression of CMTM3 and SSTR2 genes is higher in patients with right-sided colon tumors (p=0.047). Similarly, the expression of CMTM3 and SSTR2 genes is higher in patients with left-sided colon tumors (p=0.026). When we compared CMTM3 and SSTR2 gene expression for patients with right-sided and left-sided colon tumors; CMTM3 gene expression is higher only in patients with left-sided colon tumors (p=0.027). The higher CMTM3 and SSTR2 gene expression in males in patients with colorectal cancer may be a marker to explain the higher with colorectal cancer in males. The higher CMTM3 gene expression in patients with left-sided colon tumors may be associated with a higher incidence of colorectal cancer in the left-sided colon. This study, which we conducted based on the Mersin sample, is the first study in our country on the expression values of CMTM3 and SSTR2 genes in colorectal cancer tissue and control groups.
