Investigation of Şerif Muhiddin Targan's "Capris I" and "Running Child"

Şerif Muhiddin TARGAN, who lived between 1892-1967, is an important oud virtuoso and composer of Turkish Music. He started music at an early age by studying the oud and then the cello. Since he has been in more than one country, it is seen that traditional and modern music are blended in his art. The fact that he wrote the composition for the oud, technical studies on the oud instrument and realized the idea of writing a piece for the instrument makes Targan special. Differences of 'Kapris I and Running Child' from Turkish Music; Although they were written for the oud, Western music features are dominant in both works. They carry the characteristics of the "Descriptive Works", which is one of our instrumental works. Thanks to being a special piece for the instrument, they gave an identity to the oud instrument. In terms of rhythm, none of these works have any rhythm specific to Turkish Music (such as lax or big rhythms). They were written in Western Music styles. In terms of performance features, advanced technique (advanced positions, speed) is seen in the works. "Kapris I" and "Running Child" works written by Şerif Muhiddin Targan for oud were examined first in general and then in detail, under the title of "Form, Melody, Rhythm, Performance", each sentence separately. Examining the form in terms of features; It includes examinations in terms of form, structure and style. In the analysis of the sentences, "structure-melody" was given together, and then it was evaluated in detail in terms of "rhythm and performance", respectively. The aim is to investigate the importance of these works in terms of composition and oud performance by examining the details. With this study, it is thought that these performance features can be used in today's composers and oud performances.
