Abstract (EN)

Aims:Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (IPH) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the loss of cells that secrete dopamine in the basal ganglia.Galectins are multipotent, evolutionarily conserved, cell surface glycoconjugated and crosslinked carbohydrate-binding proteins. The roles of these proteins in the diagnosis of the disease have been investigated. Material and methods:Patients who were diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease were classified as early (stage 1-2) and advanced stage (stage 3-5) according to the hohenyar classification. In addition, voluntary cases without parkinson disease constituted the control group.Serum Galectin-3 and serum Galectin-4 levels were compared between Parkinson's and control groups and early and advanced stage Parkinson's groups. Results: There were 30 age and gender-matched control and 60 parkinsonian patients.Serum galectin-3 levels were 914,05 ± 643,61 in the control group and 2691 ± 1754,43, P <0,01 in the patient group. Serum galectin-4 levels in the patient group were 197,97 ± 46,42 and 334,263±37 and P <0,01.There were 20 patients in the early stage parkinson group and 40 patients in the advanced stage group.Among these groups, the predictability of the advanced stage of serum galectin-3 level was 1909,81 for sensitivty: 90%, AUC: 0,923, P <0,01.Sensitivity for predicting advanced stage for Galectin-4 was 67.5%, specificity: 99.9%, P <0.01 at the cut-off 293,5 value. Conclusion:Serum Galectin-3 and galectin-4 levels may good predictors of Parkinson's disease and prediction of advanced disease.
