Locations mentioned within the context of history-geography relation in prophetic biography: İbn Hisham example

Having accurate knowledge of location and geography while studying the events of history is one of the key points that will enable the events to be understood and evaluated more correct. However, the perspective on history is generally more event-centric. That is, the location factor usually remains in the background. For this reason, evaluating the space and true conditions in which the event occurred while analyzing historical events might lack critical information, which may cause misinterpreting of the real cause and results of the said event. Ibn Hisham's work named As-Siret'n-nabawiyya is a source that frequently includes locations while describing events. Among these places, natural elements of geography such as rivers, mountains, plains, valleys are duly mentioned. It is also possible to find many references to places especially in the poems in the work of Ibn Hisham. In our study, which is based on the work of Ibn Hisham, the locations referred to in the life and struggle of the Prophet were determined and their positions in the geography and their relations with historical events were aimed to be revealed. Our research has shown that around four hundred places are referred to in Ibn Hisham's work. Nearly eighty-five of these places are geographical elements such as mountains, hills, valleys while fifteen of them are water wells. Ninety places which are considered to be directly related to the life of Prophet Mohammad are mentioned in our thesis. In the regional distribution of these places, the main place was the Hijaz Region where the Prophet was born, lived and died. For this reason, we have focused our study in the regions of Hijaz. In our thesis, we have also prepared and added a glossary of all the places in As-Siret'n-nabawiyya that will provide convenience to researchers. The names of the places that are indirectly related to the life of the Prophet are also mentioned in this dictionary.
