Social knowledges teachers opinions regarding to the social sciences education in Turkey

The purpose of this study on social studies education held in Turkey, taking the views of teachers the situation in our country is revealed. The research was conducted in accordance with the mixed research model in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together. Quantitative data gathered from the questionnaire form in the research were concatenated with qualitative data obtained from interviews conducted simultaneously. Quantitative information is provided by social studies teachers their views on the social studies education held in Turkey used to reveal, qualitative data were used to determine the reasons for the views. In the academic year 2016-2017, Turkey constitutes serving 135 social studies teachers in various provinces. Participants were determined on a voluntary basis. In the survey, for the collection of data on teacher opinions, the questionnaire, which was prepared by the researcher, and adding open-ended questions to survey questions semi-structured interview form was used. The frequency and percentage values of the quantitative data were taken and the qualitative data were analyzed with descriptive analysis and continuous comparison methods. Quantitative and qualitative data have been examined in terms of different variables and their findings have been included in the research. As a result of the study, according to the social studies teachers participating in the research; while the Social Studies Teacher Education Undergraduate Program can acquire the knowledge of the field required in the professional life to a moderate level, the profession of the teaching profession can gain the upper middle level. In addition, social studies teachers, they are thinking that they are themselves well very close to one effective in giving the gains they are expected to achieve in social studies classes. The teachers indicate that the parents and student expectations of the overall outcome of the students' achievement-expected achievements in social studies classes are moderate level. On behaviors targeted to be gained to the students when we look at how effective the program is, the impact of the program is also seen moderate by the teachers. In addition, the teachers state that secondary school students in our country graduate with a moderate degree of attainment of the targeted behavior through secondary school social studies lesson. According to the results of the research; for more effective social studies education; it has been suggested that social education teacher training programs should be able to respond to needs, it has been suggested that parents and students should be more informed about the goals of social studies education.
