Determination of traditional houses in Surmene Dirlik district and evaluation in the context of conservation

Examples of rural architecture that contain original values with regional culture, building traditions and use of local materials are found in every region of our country with different types of buildings. It is extremely important that these structures, which are rich in cultural assets and have an important place, are identified and protected from the point of view of cultural sustainability. Based on this, the study aimed to determine the traditional houses of the "Sürmene Dirlik district", to evaluate the present situation and to present conservation proposals. At first, rural architecture, concept of rural architecture in Anatolia and the Eastern Black Sea region and previous research and resources aimed at conserving rural architectural heritage were examined. After that, a field study was carried out in the Sürmene Dirlik district, and the entire area was scanned and traditional houses with rural architectural features were identified. It was observed that most of the traditional houses of Dirlik district, which were evaluated present situation, had completely or partially lost their original qualities, while some were very damaged and some were in ruins. It has been emphasized that the remaining original examples are in danger of losing their original architectural features, either due to the unconscious intervention of their owners or lack of necessary care because they are out of use. At the end of the study, assessments were made to ensure the cultural sustainability of the qualified housing of the region with rural architectural heritage value, and recommendation were made for their preservation with a holistic approach.
