Analysis and protection measures of functional systems in Akşehir historical houses

The sustainability of historic buildings should be ensured to provide the continuity of data for future generations and the preservation of cultural values. Functional systems, consisting of heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, roof drainage, clean water and waste water systems, are important basic elements for the continuity of buildings and for providing the necessary passive living and active climate conditions. Although there are studies on the functional systems of historic buildings, there are few studies that systematically examine all systems in traditional historic houses . Therefore, in this research, mainly the functional systems in traditional Anatolian house were studied and detailed. Based on the obtained data, 72 traditional historical houses in Konya, in the center of Akşehir district, were studied and among these buildings, the registered traditional houses in block 137, plot 32 and plot 137, plot 34 were determined as a case study. Then, the sample houses were investigated in terms of functional systems, ecological and energy efficient design criteria. Energy conservation, water conservation, material conservation, design of a livable physical environment and consideration of physical environmental conditions, and optimal use of solar energy in the design of the building envelope, form, and facades were examined as design criteria, and a comparative evaluation was made with traditional historic houses. The main methods used in the research of this thesis are the preparation of measured drawings of the existing functional systems and elements, as well as the preparation of detailed surveys, fieldwork, archival and literature research, interviews with local authorities and a conservation analysis. The aim of this study is to investigate the functional systems used in the traditional houses of Akşehir using example buildings that have retained their originality to this day, and to determine the state of conservation and the criteria for energy-efficient design. It was found that the functional systems in the studied traditional houses were modified to adapt them to today's comfort conditions, and most of the original systems are no longer used today. Specifically for the studied traditional houses, this study is important to make the functional systems in the traditional Anatolian houses more known, to preserve and maintain the original condition of these systems, and to study the adaptation possibilities to the present comfort conditions. In addition, it is important and necessary to study the functional systems in the context of ecological design criteria, to set an example for the study of similar historic residential buildings with the proposed methodology developed in this thesis, and to investigate the continuity and potential of traditional construction methods and natural renewable materials used in these functional systems by adapting them to today's comfort conditions.
