Of exegesis (al-tafsīr) and the science of logic (al-manṭiq)

This dissertation examines the relationship between the science of exegesis (al-tafsīr) which is the science of interpretion and explanation of the Qur'ān, and the science of logic (al-manṭiq) which aims to correct one`s thinking and contemplating. The study, which deals with the interaction between the two disciplines, chooses its samples mostly from the (dirāya) exegesis written in the late period. Since the position of logic in the history of Islamic sciences and culture is controversial. it has not been adequately investigated whether he is employed in the exegesis of the Qur'ān or not. The study is important in terms of addressing the relationship between the two disciplines and bringing together the discussions. Since the third century of the Islamic world, when translation started to be carried out systematically, the progress of logic science in the Islamic world was followed and it was tried to determine at what point it met tafsīr. In this context, firstly the history of tafsīr and logic was focused on the historical course of the Islamic world, and then the relationship of logic and other sciences including tafsīr was examined. Finally, in the tafsīr method, 'ulûmu al-Qur'an works and mainly (dirāya) tafsīr, what is said about logic was determined and how logic was used as a means of interpretation was shown with examples. The main claim of this thesis is that the logic affects the science of tafsīr in terms of its contribution to interpretation ability and richness of tafsīr. Despite some defensive opposing stances, it has been determined that the logic contributed as a method tool in rational inferences as well as linguistic interpretations, especially in the dirāya tafsīr.
