Abstract (EN)

The IPCC reports since 1990 have studied the trends in the variability of our climatic system. Most recently, reports by the IPCC established that global temperatures have risen with less cold days and nights. Variability has also been recorded in the water cycle all around the world. Already observed impacts and forecasts are predicting vulnerability situations that will threaten the very existence of man on earth. Sub-Saharan African will be affected greatly by the impacts to unfold. Furthermore, agriculture which is the major source of livelihood for the rural populace will be significantly affected. The reason being not only on the dependence of Sub-Saharan Africa's agriculture on rainfall, but also due to the high vulnerability of the region to climate change. Increasing population, which is a characteristic of developing economies, will further worsen the situation of the region. The surest path to salvaging the region has been identified in improving agricultural adaptive capacity. To achieve this, the region's agriculture has to improve through technology capacity building. This study was conducted with the main objective of determining the level of vulnerability and identifying the kind of new technologies and management techniques needed to close the gap in terms of climate change adaptive capacity in Africa's agriculture. Household data was taken from selected communities in two districts of Ghana (Pru district and Wa West district). In total, 174 households were interviewed using a two phased questionnaire. The data was analysed using the livelihood vulnerability index (LVI) developed by (Hahn et al., 2009) and a modified Technology Need Assessment method as used by (Essegbey et al., 2012). Regression analysis and descriptive statistics were also used in the result presentation. The results show that both study areas are vulnerable to climate change. Technology usage was identified to be very low with a concurrent low yields in all crops. The study identified that establishing an agricultural mini-technology park in rural communities along with establishing irrigation facilities will significantly increase agricultural productivity as well as reduce the vulnerability situation of the rural communities in the country. It is recommended that further studies should be carried on to assess the effectiveness of a technology park in the rural communities of Ghana.
