Sir William Muir's approach to sirah according to his work "The life of Mahomet"

The studies written in the 19th century in the West have come forward with the claim to change the approaches to Prophet Muhammad presented in the orientalist literature and to write the truth about him by obtaining and relying on the original Arabic sources and by applying the method of historical criticism to them. The work of Sir William Muir is the first work written in English with the utilization of such Arabic sources. Understanding this work and its methodology is important for understanding the Western conception of Prophet Muhammad. In this study, we tried to elucidate Muir's work The Life of Mahomet together with the method of historical criticism as well. Besides this, we tried to explain different approaches to this method. Eventually, we realized that William Muir's approach does not differ much from the mainstream medieval conception even though he claims to have written his work objectively by relying on the original Arabic sources.
