Abstract (EN)

This research was conducted to examine the effects of diabetes education given to children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus with digital game and video animation on quality of life and metabolic control. The study is a single-blind, randomized controlled trial. It was conducted with a total of 55 children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, including the experimental (n=27) and control group (n=28). Diabetes education was given to the experimental group with digital games and video animations. Data were collected before the training, at the 3rd and 6th months after the training. Research data were collected with "Descriptive Information Form", "Quality of Life Scale in Children with Diabetes Mellitus" and "Metabolic Control Parameters Follow-up Form". In the analysis of the data, Mann Whitney U, Chi-square, Friedman and Bonferroni Dunn tests were used. While there was no statistical difference in terms of quality of life mean scores between the experimental and control groups before the education (p>0.05), it was found that the total quality of life score averages of the children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group after the education (p<0.05) was detected. While the total mean score of the quality of life scale of the experimental group increased in the post-training follow-up tests (p<0.05), a decrease was determined in the control group (p<0.05). There was no statistical difference in terms of HbA1c mean scores between the groups before and after the training. It was determined that the mean HbA1c scores of the children in the experimental group decreased (p<0.05), while the mean of the HbA1c scores of the control group increased (p<0.05). As a result, it has been determined that digital game and video animation-based education are effective in increasing the quality of life of children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and reducing the HbA1c value.
