The effect of web-based Watson Human Care Model of education on the HbA1c, depression levels and quality of life in adolescents with type 1 diabetes

This study was conducted to determine the effect of Web-based Watson HCM of education on the HbA1c, depression levels and quality of life and carrelation among them in adolescents with T1 DM. In the study, focus group interview was used for qualitative research and experimental design with pretest - posttest control group for quantitative research. 30 volunteer adolescents aged between 11 and 18 who were followed by the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology Adıyaman University Training and Research Hospital were taken into the study. For the data collection, the Diabetic Individuals Recognition Form, the Depression Scale for Children, the Quality of Life Scale for Children with Diabetes and the DISCERN Web Site Assessment Scale were used and a web page was prepared by using the T1 DM Adolescent Education Guide and Watson HCM processes. 14 sessions of live video interview were conducted with adolescents in the experimental group and these interviews were recorded. In the adolescents of the experimental group, a significant decrease in the level of depression, a significant increase in quality of life, and a positive change in HbA1c levels were observed after diabetes education. Adolescents of experimental group found the web page useful, effective and reliable. During the interval between the first session and the last session of the interviews, it was observed that adolescents in the experimental group improved in knowledge about physiological (HbA1c) and psychosocial (especially depression and quality of life) effects of diabetes and the ability to cope with these effects. As a result of the research; diabetes education prepared according to the Web-based Watson Human Care Model decreased the adolescents' depression levels, enhanced quality of life, positively affected HbA1c levels and diabetes management and it is suggested that education should be developed and disseminated.
