Abstract (EN)

This project aims to draw a road map for Turkey?s international relations, using African Countries as an example, with special focus on Maghreb region in particular. The role of this region is analyzed by outlining the geography of Maghreb, social structures and impact of colonization in the region, global energy policies as well as the crucial role it plays in the ?World Energy Corridor? and the relations with European Union influence. The first part of the chapter covers the history of the region under 400 years of Ottoman Empire rule and how the region was shielded from the colonizing countires during this period; Second part of the the chapter focuses on the last 200 years of European colonization up to their independence struggles.Bi-lateral relations with the Turkish Republic in the 1950s are covered. The question of why the ?Cold War Era? Turkish Republic and the newly independent Maghreb countries were not able to establish warm relations until the 1990s is addressed. The improvements in bi-lateral relations since the 1990s through African Summits and business councils are also analyzed.Turkey has to carefully navigate the current political situation and turmoil and come up with strong solutions for the region. This transitional period is a great opportunity to stake Turkey?s claim as a regional leader and powerhouse. The opportunities and challenges for Republic of Turkey have been discussed in the final chapter of this paper.
