Examination of pedometer based physical activity levels of university academic and administrative staff

The aim of this study is to examine the pedometer-based physical activity levels of university academic and administrative staff. For this purpose, a total of 60 people, 29 academic and 31 administrative staff, participated in the study voluntarily. The survey method was used together with the pedometer, which is the objective method to measure the physical activity levels of the participants. SPSS 22.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Illinois, USA) program was used for statistical processing of the data. Values were presented as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, and standard error. Significance level was accepted as p<0.05. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to test for normality. Independent Sample T test was used in paired group comparisons. One Way Anova and LSD tests were used to analyze the differences between groups. As a result of the statistical analysis, a significant difference was found in favor of the academic staff when the total MET values were examined according to the academic and administrative staff levels (p<0.05). In the academic staff group, 5 people were inactive, 12 people were minimally active, and 12 were very active. In the administrative staff group, 16 people were identified as inactive, 12 as minimally active and 3 as very active. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of total MET, number of steps, calories and distance values according to age groups, alcohol use, education level and regular sports status (p>0.05). As a result, when the physical activity levels of the academic and administrative staff are examined, it can be said that the physical activity levels of the administrative staff group are low.
