Abstract (EN)

This study is planned to determine the relationship between circadian rhythm, nutritional habits and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in healthcare personnel that working shift and non shift. The research was carried out on 70 people working as 33 shifts and 37 non shift health personnel at Osmaniye State Hospital between November 2019 and January 2020. The questionnaire form was applied by the researcher by face-to-face interview in order to determine the general characteristics, health information, nutritional habits and working style of the individuals. Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to measure the sleep quality of individuals and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to determine the level of physical activity. 3-day food consumption record was taken to determine the daily energy and nutrient intake. Body composition was measured using BIA. Anthropometric measurements were taken by the researcher. Blood parameters and blood pressure measurements were analyzed to evaluate the MetS status. The average age of individuals in VG is 37.45 ± 8.96 years and 39.32 ± 7.22 years in KG. The physical activity levels of both groups are low. The frequency of those who are overweight is 53.1% in VG and 38.9% in KG (p> 0.05). The frequency of MetS was higher in VG (VG: 48.5%, KG: 24.3%) (p <0.05). It was found that individuals in VG had higher saturated fatty acid intake on the day of shift and leave than those in KG (p<0.05). 68.8 % of individuals in VG and 24.3% of those in KG have poor sleep quality (p <0.05). 50 % of individuals with good sleep quality in KG are normal and 44.4% of those with bad sleep quality are slightly obese (p<0.05). No relationship was found between sleep quality and MetS in VG and KG. The PSQI score in VG was found to have a negative correlation with vitamin C for shift day, protein and tryptophan for leave day (p <0.05). As a result; it was understood that shift work caused MetS development with its negative effect on circadian rhythm, sleep and feeding habits. People working in shifts should be monitored in terms of sleep and nutrition and they should be provided with a healthy and balanced diet that suitable their special needs.
