Abstract (EN)

The industrial revolution is a social act that has influenced human history in many ways. The social order has been redefined, different classes have emerged, and technological developments have taken place. In the context of these technological developments, the influence of mass media has mostly been on art and society. The disinformation nature of these instruments has created mass culture, and the possibility of reproduction made artists feel the need to search for different ways to express themselves. Some avant-garde artists seeking different forms of expression have struggled to evaluate the mass media of their time as an artistic material. The evaluation process outside of this different traditional function of film and photography also applies to the electronic image. The electronic image has been incorporated into the art scene against the influence of the television that created it on society. Leading artists who have realized this action have provided a kind of solution from the problem itself. In the first part, the social and technological developments that prepared the discovery of the video were examined, the physical and technical features of the video were mentioned and the process of being involved in the artistic environment was evaluated. In the second part, the art movements of Futurism, Constructivism, Dada, Pop Art, Conceptual Art and Fluxus which are the basis of video art were examined and the change of art materials in the historical process was observed. In the third part, the similarities and differences of art disciplines such as painting, sculpture, installation, photography and film are compared with video in aesthetic and technical terms.
