Abstract (EN)

In the study, it was aimed to investigate the ability of C1 level students who learn Turkish as a foreign language to summarize the texts they listen to. The research was carried out with 22 foreign students studying at the C1 level at Uşak University Turkish Teaching Application and Research Center in the Spring Semester of the 2020-2021 Academic Year. In the research, students who learn Turkish as a foreign language were listened to six texts, which were created in informative and narrative style. Students were asked to write a summary based on the texts they listened to. These summaries were scored using the "Summarizing Strategies Scoring Scale" developed by Özçakmak (2015). Student summaries on this scale; It was examined in a total of eight items: "writing a title, using the point of view correctly, using the narrative mode correctly, choosing important information, deleting unimportant information, not including non-text information, coherent writing and abbreviation". In addition, students' summaries; style of expression, gender, age and nationality variables were also discussed. As a result of the research, it was seen that 22 foreign students were unsuccessful in using the summarization strategies in the texts they listened to. It was concluded that the expression style variable did not make a significant difference in terms of summarizing skills. It was also observed that the age variable did not have a significant effect on the use of summarization strategies. When the summaries are analyzed in terms of gender variable, it is seen that female students are more successful than male students. When the summarization skills of the students were evaluated in terms of the nationality variable, it was concluded that the most successful students were from Kazakhstan and the most unsuccessful students were from Egypt. The frequencies of the mistakes made by the students while using the summarization strategies were also calculated. According to the results obtained, it is seen that the students mostly have problems in "writing a title, abridgment, choosing important information and using mode of expression properly'' strategies.
