New social movements and new information and communication technologies: The case of anti-nuclear platform in Turkey

Of late, examples of online activism, formation of online social networks and the emergence of internet mobilized social movements have called attention to the importance of the relationship between social movements and new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). These new technologies, which are being used more and more often by both individuals and social movement organizations, have become increasingly more important in social movement studies. This study focuses on the impact new ICTs have on social movements. The possible effects are analyzed under two distinct headings: movement networks and mobilization structures. As a case study we use the Anti-Nuclear Platform in Turkey in terms of its use of new ICTs (namely, its official website and social media pages); consequent advantages and/or disadvantages of these new ICTs; and whether or not they are adequate substitutes for face-to-face interaction between the Platform and its supporters. While the study reveals that new ICTs serve as important tools for coordination, communication and broadcasting for the Platform, it has been concluded that in order to ensure sustainability of the movement and to increase the potential movement participants, it is ideal to use both online and offline communication channels.
