Psychoanalytic and philosophical exploration of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

Through a comprehensive analysis informed by psychoanalytic biography, Machiavellianism and Schopenhauerism, this thesis aims to provide new insights into Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, contributing to a deeper understanding of its timeless themes in this inner journey. Analyzing the novella from a psychoanalytic perspective provides valuable insights into the themes and characters in Heart of Darkness, which have been influenced by Conrad's own experiences and psychological struggles. In addition, the atrocity and Machiavellian traces in Heart of Darkness show the improbability of wholly satisfaction for the endless will and how these transform Kurtz into a cruel man when external restraints are absent in the dark Congo River. Lastly, the study highlights that Heart of Darkness presents its readers a dark sorrowful gloomy atmosphere in the most parts. The theme of pessimism in HOD has its reflection from Conrad's own pessimistic view which is the reflection of his concurrence with Schopenhauerian philosophy. Pessimism and darkness felt throughout the novella is only a small side of the Schopenhauerian view. It might be declared that Heart of Darkness is a mannish novella where women are nameless, inferior, insignificant, and deathly silent most of the time except for occasional cries. This thesis explores how Conrad's psychoanalytic biography hints at biographical signs in Heart of Darkness. Furthermore, it also studies Machiavellian view to search for the evil in this inner journey, and highlights Schopenhauerian influence in the sense of pessimist, gloomy, sorrowful atmosphere which is nourished with an inferior view of women.

The (re)construction of the image of "the Turk" in America, 1863-1963

This study delves into the history of transatlantic relations between the United States and Turkey by foregrounding the function of literary texts in the conduct of diplomacy. It highlights the role that individuals and civil institutions played in the course of affairs by reconstructing the image of Turkey and Turks in the United States between 1863 and 1963. It begins by tracing the history of American institutions, particularly Robert College and the Constantinople Woman's College, in the Ottoman Empire. Based on an analysis of works written by the founders and leading educators of these schools, with Cyrus Hamlin and Mary Mills Patrick occupying the most important place among them, the transformation of American institutions in the Ottoman Empire and the effects of these changes are discussed with an emphasis on their impact on Turkish-American relations. Within this framework, the autobiographical works written by the alumni of these schools, including Halide Edib Adıvar, and their contemporaries, constitute the primary sources for this study, as they represent the first cohort of Turkish writers who published works for American readers. A close reading of their works sheds light on the details of diplomatic, social, and cultural relations between Turkey and the United States in the aftermath of the First World War. As they endeavored to claim authority over representation of Turks in America, they challenged narrative hegemonies such as American Orientalism, the prevailing negative image of Turks, as well as grand narratives in the form of official histories in both countries. This dissertation concludes with a case study of the Turkish Information Office, a public diplomacy initiative that made use of both fictional and non-fictional texts to promote Turkey in America.

Christopher isherwood: A life story dedicated to the act of writing in search of an artistic, sexual and spiritual identity

As an author who attributed a deeply significant personal meaning to writing, Christopher Isherwood's main purpose in fiction was to discover who he really was and what his life meant to him. The act of writing was not something mundane for Isherwood. The raw material of his art was his own personal experience and life story. For this reason, the structure of his many works are autobiographical and self-defining. Therefore, interpreting Isherwood's fiction independently of his life story is impossible. The theoretical framework that strengthens this study is the 'Life Story Model of Identity' theory presented by personality psychologist Dan P. Mc Adams. Beginning from his early career as a writer until the end, Isherwood's motivation for writing was to speak out of his own experiences, making meaning out of them and reflecting them into his fiction. The incidents he went through in life play a critical role in understanding his fiction and, years later, Dan McAdams has provided an ideal approach that helps us to grasp what Isherwood was really doing with his fiction. During my research, what thrilled me most was exploring how the relationship between Christopher Isherwood's life story and his fiction chime with McAdams' claims and observations about life narratives. McAdams claims that personal stories are our identities. Like a novelist, we work on our lives to make sense and meaning out of them. Our experiences, values, beliefs and objectives in life affect the formation of our identities. For McAdams, identity is a story which has a beginning, a middle and an ending, with a plot, theme and characters in it. Drawing upon the framework of Dan P. McAdams' life story model of identity, the aim of this study is to portray the relationship between personal story telling and identity construction in Isherwood's novels. By analyzing Christopher Isherwood's fiction within the performance of his life story, my intention in this research is to unravel the formation of the artistic, sexual and spiritual identities that he constructed in different periods of his life. McAdams notes that there are key scenes in every individual's life story and Isherwood's life was full of with transitions, gains, losses and struggles that stand out as turning points. For this reason this study focuses on three different episodes of his life: London, Berlin and California. The experiences he had in these cities contributed Isherwood's storytelling and help us to reach a better understanding of the fiction he produced these distinct times and places. Starting from his early work All the Conspirators continuing with The Memorial, Mr. Norris Changes Trains, Goodbye to Berlin, Prater Violet, The World in the Evening and finally until his most critically acclaimed novel, A Single Man, it is possible to observe how the identities of Christopher Isherwood have been shaped, changed, developed and integrated into a coherent life story as an author, as a homosexual and as a spiritual individual.

Idiosyncratic memory: Self construction in Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel

Memory is a social structure, lying at the root of culture that connects individual lives through language, history, literature and innumerable cultural texts, narratives, historical documents, and museums, monuments and even historical sites. It is language-based; being ever-evolving mental faculty, memory is continuous construction and reconstruction of mind and self. The social movement in constructionist psychology treats it as a narrative or as a story telling activity— a sort of fictionalization of perceptual experiences. Remembering is accordingly sensed as an act of creating/recreating memory by narrating it through a channel of language, which's meaning and construction vary from person to person, and according to circumstances of now self, environment or audiences whom it is told. For this thesis, a framework synthesizing various but interrelated concepts mostly from memory literature and several humanities on memory like philosophy, psychology and history provides critical perspective and theoretical background in the analysis of American author Thomas Wolfe's first autobiographical work Look Homeward, Angel: A Story of the Buried Life (2006). The thesis also surveys contemporary and classic memory literature including American authors Pagan Kennedy (Confessions of a Memory Eater, 2013) and Vladimir Nabokov (Speak, Memory, 1989) and British authors Tom McCarthy (Remainder, 2005) and Kazuo Ishiguro (The Buried Giant, 2015) and Check author Milan Kundera (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, 1982). Each of those stories idiosyncratically tells memory through literary themes of remembrance, amnesia, identity search or existential crisis. In a sense, the thesis addresses how and in what ways literature may reflect philosophy, psychology and history that tackle memory scientifically. Likewise, studying the ways Wolfe modified and narrated his actual experiences in his literary work is linked with an understanding of the writer's world, which is as well related to social, cultural, historical political and also literary contexts in the production and the reproduction of Look Homeward Angel, and their examination in the scope of this study; however, "autobiography is itself a major source of concern because of its very instability in terms of the postulated opposites between self and world, literature and history, facts and fiction, subject and objects (Marcus 7). Self-other or subject-object dichotomies, which underlie the persistent dialectic in the criticism of autobiography as both literary and historical narrative, are revisited, criticized and developed in the analysis of the self representation in Look Homeward, Angel.

An investigation of autobiographical memories through the lens of an honor culture

Culture influences autobiographical remembering. However, no previous study examined autobiographical memory narratives through the lens of an honor culture. The present set of studies investigated the effects of implicit and explicit activation of honor-related schemas, honor endorsement, and gender on autobiographical memories of Turkish participants. In Study 1, we primed honor by using honor-related words in honor condition (vs. neutral words in control condition) in a scrambled sentences task, then asked participants to report one gender-defining memory. Results revealed that men in the honor condition gave more memories that include honor-enhancing and honor-attacking themes, compared to men in the control condition. In addition, women in the honor condition were less likely to provide familial narratives, but more likely to report memories from an observer perspective as their honor endorsement scores increase, compared to men in the honor condition. In Study 2, we randomly assigned participants to honor-enhancing, honor-attacking, and important memory conditions, and investigated how honor-related memories differ from personally important memories. Honor-related memories were more likely to include a relationship with social members and contain references to an audience. Honor-enhancing memories were more likely to contain honor-related themes, and more likely to be rated higher on phenomenological properties, compared to other memories. Also, men tended to rate their memories higher on phenomenological properties compared to women. Taken together, our results suggest a form of "positivity bias" in terms of the link between autobiographical memory and culture of honor.

An investigation of phenomenological differences in bilinguals' past and future autobiographical events across languages

The aim of the present study was to examine the phenomenological characteristics of bilinguals' past and future events across their languages. For this purpose, fifty-nine (Mage = 22.02, SDage = 2.01) Turkish (L1) - English (L2) bilinguals (F = 37, 63%) participated in two sessions, each conducted in a particular language (Turkish and English, with the counterbalanced order) and separated by one week. Participants' level of proficiency in each language was assessed with Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q). In each session, after completing the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), participants wrote down their past and future negative events and then rated eight different phenomenological characteristics including vividness, sensory details, visual perspectives, and emotional characteristics (valence, intensity, distance, preoccupation) with Autobiographical Memory Characteristics Questionnaire (AMCQ), followed by the questions regarding the temporal and linguistic details of the events. Results showed significant differences across languages in visual perspectives and emotional characteristics, both for future and past events. Additionally, there were significant differences in the vividness ratings of past events between languages. The findings of the study overall support the notion of reduced emotionality and increased psychological distance in the second language. These findings contribute to our understanding of the impact of second language use on autobiographical thinking and shed light on the relationship between second language and emotional experience. Additionally, this research is especially noteworthy in that it represents one of the first investigations into the phenomenology of bilinguals' imagined future events in their second language.

Changes in psychological well-being after disclosing negative autobiographical memories

Emotional disclosure of negative experiences has long been associated with improvement in physical and psychological health (Pennebaker, 1997). The present study has three main goals: First, to test whether disclosure of previously undisclosed autobiographical memories (AMs) is more beneficial than disclosed memories. Second, to find whether disclosing shame and guilt memories differs in terms of health consequences. Third, to determine the predictors of well-being. To achieve these goals, participants were randomly assigned to three groups: undisclosed shame, guilt or disclosed negative memory, and attended three writing sessions. Well-being measures were collected before, immediately after writing and one month after the writing sessions. Results revealed that, contrary to our hypotheses, immediate psychological and physical symptoms decreased through writing sessions. However, in long term psychological and physical health deteriorated. Shame and guilt memories did not show any difference, but undisclosed memory groups were affected more negatively by emotional disclosure than disclosed memory group. Finally, negative affect and resolution were found to be significant predictors of well-being. Overall, the present study failed to replicate previous studies with shame and guilt memories. Moreover, the reverse effect demonstrated that benefits of emotional disclosure might be more restricted to certain types of memories and health outcomes.

Autobiographical memories of first- and second-generation Balkan immigrants and place attachment to the homeland

In the last century, thousands of Turkish and Albanian people immigrated to Turkey from Balkans due to the political and religious oppression. In this study, we investigated the memories of first-generation immigrants who were born in Balkans and immigrated to Turkey and the second-generation immigrants who were born and raised in Turkey. Paired groups of parents (first generation) and their children (second generation) recollected two self-defining memories about their immigrant identity and completed self/identity measures of homeland attachment, homeland identity and immigrant identity. The second generation additionally reported two vicarious memories from their parents' lives. The narrative coding revealed prominent themes in memories such as assimilation in Balkans, adaptation to and alienation in Turkey, and embracing national/immigrant identity. Furthermore, the second generation reported more generic and integrative memories compared to the first generation and the two groups narrated memories of similar events, yet with relatively diverse themes. Further comparison between the two generations revealed no differences in terms of self/identity measures and memory phenomenology ratings except that the second generation rated their memories higher in positivity and sensory detail compared to the first generation. Moreover, the associations between self/identity measures and memory phenomenology ratings in the second generation implied stronger interrelations between self and memory. Lastly, second generation immigrants reported vicarious memories with either comparable or stronger phenomenology compared to the personal memories.

The effect of disability perception on the temporal distribution of emotionally charged autobiographical memories

One of the most common methods to investigate the relationship between autobiographical remembering and the self is to examine life span distribution of such memories. Numerous studies have observed an increase in the number of memories from one's youth when identity formation is said to occur. Studies have shown that significant external events result in development of a new identity; this identity creates a change in temporal distribution of ABMs. In the present study; temporal distribution, narrative and phenomenological qualities of ABMs were investigated by taking disability perception and period of disability identity formation into consideration. Both visually disabled (VD) and sighted participants were asked to recall most important, happiest and saddest memories from their lives. Disabled participants also completed some additional questions about their disability perceptions. The results have demonstrated that VD and sighted show similar memory distributions for their most important and saddest memories. However, for happiest memories, VD group recalled events from predominantly the age between 20-29; whereas sighteds remembered events from the age 30-39. When the age of disability identity formation was used as starting point of memory distribution, the most important memories of VD participants primarily came from the first decade after the disability identity formation. Additionally, most of the happiest memories were related to the concept of achievement for VD participants; for sighted participants a similar relationship was observed in relationship related memories. Finally, VD participants mostly gave lower visual imagery ratings and higher auditory imagery and belief ratings for each type of memories.

Self-defining memories of change and continuity: The effect of university experience

The present study investigated stability and change in self-concepts in response to a transitional life experience: university experience. Life transitions typically present challenges to the self, in which case individuals use autobiographical reasoning and integration of memories to restore coherence. There is also the tendency to view the self in an improving way (Wilson & Ross, 2003). The phenomenological and narrative characteristics of self-defining memories for changing and stable self-concepts were examined in relation to the change students experienced in transition (psychological and material) and the time passing over the event. To investigate the effect of transitional impact, memories of students from Istanbul and other cities who came to Istanbul to study university were compared. Freshman and junior undergraduates recalled two self-defining memories, one memory representing how they changed after starting university and another one representing how they remained the same after starting university. We found that both change and continuity memories were specific memories. We also found that change memories were more integrative. However, freshmen who experienced less challenge had slightly more integrative memories. Contrary to the expectations, this might indicate that when the challenge is not high, people can complete the meaning making process in shorter time and integrate their memories into self. Additionally, meaning making was related to well-being such that students who retrieved two non-integrative memories had lower life satisfaction compared to students who retrieved at least one integrative memory. Finally, students retrieved relationship/intimacy memories at most for both change and continuity memories. However, they focused more on personal development and achievement memories for change memories while retrieving memories about more stable aspects of self like values.

Details in hand: How does gesturing relate to autobiographical thinking?

Gestures and speech have different expressive capabilities. When narrating an autobiographical memory, gesturing may reduce the cognitive load of verbal reporting, gestures may function as externalized cues activating episodic details of the memory representation, or gestures might help the construction of event scenes experienced during the original event. Thus, gestures might have a mnemonic role in the retrieval of episodically and phenomenologically rich memories and this potential role might change as a function of age, reflecting the developmental differences in gesturing, memory, and related cognitive systems. Additionally, the use of gestural and verbal modalities, either separately or simultaneously, might vary with age and the episodicity of the information recalled. Using the cue-word technique, 35 children and 46 adults were asked to recall and verbally report six memories, then they rated the recalled memories on three phenomenological properties: visual imagery, spatial imagery, and reliving. Episodic, visuo-motoric and nonepisodic details of autobiographical memories and representational gestures produced during memory narration were coded from video-records. In adult memories, representational gesture production was associated with the recall of more episodic as well as visuo-motoric details, but not with the recall of non-episodic details. However, gesturing did not relate to the phenomenological experience of autobiographical memories via the number of details remembered. When narrating autobiographical events, adults preferred to use gestural and verbal modalities together, whereas children exclusively used the verbal modality. The modality preference of each group was more pronounced when reporting episodic details.

Autobiographical memory in depression and anxiety: Similarities and differences with the effects of early maladaptive schemas, rumination, and cognitive avoidance

The present dissertation initially aimed to investigate ABM characteristics in depression and anxiety. A second objective was to examine the relationships of EMSs, avoidance, and rumination with each other and also with depression and anxiety. Another goal was to assess the effects EMSs, avoidance, and rumination on ABM. Lastly, this research had an explorative interest for the activation of EMSs using schema vignettes, and effects of schema activation on ABM characteristics. To satisfy these aims, three studies were conducted. In Study I, schema vignettes were developed, and their manipulation abilities were tested. In Study II, data was collected from a large university student sample (N = 918) to investigate associations between EMSs and tendencies for rumination, and avoidance. Besides, Study II served a screening function for depression and anxiety. Accordingly, four groups were created (i.e., non-clinically depressed, non-clinically anxious, non-clinically comorbid, and controls) and participants of these groups were invited to Study III. In Study III, 118 participants were individually tested in laboratory setting. A cue-word type ABM test was administered in two halves with words in random order. In between two parts of the test, manipulation for schema activation was performed. The differences and similarities of the groups in the nature, content, and the perspective features of ABM; and the effects of schema activation were explored. Results yielded significant differences in the characteristics of ABMs between groups and pointed out interesting alterations in comorbidity. Schema vignettes were proved to be successful tools for activation of dominant schemas, however, schema activation had no effect on ABM. Moreover, findings revealed significant associations between certain schemas and memory features; and suggested a role for EMSs to understand individuals' tendencies for rumination and avoidance.

Autobiographical framing of fiction in Kazuo Ishiguro's the remains of the day and Never Let Me Go

This thesis explores the fictional autobiographical frames in two novels by Kazuo Ishiguro: The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go. Both of these novels are framed as autobiographical accounts of their narrators; the first is a diary and the second is a memoir. While trying to understand how this quality informs character development in these novels, I trace how the narrative is situated within the referentiality-fictionality spectrum, as suggested by the critical discourse on autobiographical writing. As this variation between the "referential" and "fictional" in relation to the fictional universes of the novels is shaped around both the type of the autobiographical text and the plots of the novels, my analyses include criticism regarding the plot elements, the style of narration, and the form through which they are presented. I find that while in the Remains of the Day, Stevens's autobiographical endeavour opens him up to formerly unexplored affective possibilities and lead him to fictionalize a future, in Never Let Me Go, Kathy's narrative becomes more referential to her reality as explored in the novel, when compared to fictions she grew up creating with her group of friends.
