At the beginning of the elements that make up today's lifestyle are the increasing needs for instant access to information, communication, originality and actuality with the digital rise. Since a life without computers and the Internet cannot be imagined in today's society, the convenience provided by the use of new media in information transfer becomes undeniable. With this study, it is aimed to show the concept of new media, which has become the focal point in the current century, and to investigate the effects of audiobook, which is a product of it, on foreign language learning from different perspectives. Because new media is incorporated into contemporary teaching theories and design of foreign language teaching. However, the critical concern at this point is that it is necessary to pay attention to which language skills can be gained and how. Within the framework of linguistically simplified audiobooks, an empirical research was carried out in order to find answers to the questions raised by this study and to focus on the deficiencies of students by addressing their media use skills. The research was designed with the participation of 54 students who are enrolled in the reading comprehension course. The aim was to clarify the advantages and disadvantages of audiobooks in foreign language learning and development of foreign language learning skills. In addition, an answer is sought to the question of whether it is a factor in enriching the course content, increasing motivation, and acquiring different strategies in language learning. Based on the results of the research, it was determined that the students abstained from them in the first survey because they did not have full knowledge of audiobooks. Therefore, more participants in the second survey than in the first survey preferred audiobooks instead of printed books as additional material to improve their language skills. It was observed that audiobooks helped students to keep their learning motivation high and improved their reading skills. In addition, the multimedia feature of audiobooks helped to increase concentration during reading. Considering the participants' desire for alternative information transfer tools and the materials they use to appeal to many senses, it can be interpreted that their hesitations about new media stem from ignorance. Based on the results of the research, it is thought that it would be beneficial to use audiobooks as supporting learning material for in-class reading comprehension lessons, in the context of developing language skills.
The Augmented Reality phenomenon is simply the integration of the real world environment with virtual images. The developments in the field of augmented reality (AR)-supported language education are still in their infancy. The aim of this thesis is to determine the criteria by which new technological methods and content such as AR should be integrated into foreign language textbooks and other language teaching materials. The criteria in this thesis are to determine the criteria by which new technological methods and content such as AR should be integrated into foreign language textbooks and other language teaching materials. This thesis will help to evaluate AR-supported foreign language textbooks in terms of pedagogical, didactic and technical aspects. Qualitative research method was preferred in this study. In addition, two types of analysis descriptive and explanatory research were used. Both document analysis textbook analysis and open-ended questions were used as qualitative data collection methods. The data of the open-ended questions were determined by qualitative content analysis. In this thesis, there are three hypotheses. For the first hypothesis, document analysis was used; for the second hypothesis, literature review was used; and for the third hypothesis, analysis of open-ended survey was used. According to the findings obtained as a result of the analyzes, all hypotheses were confirmed in the thesis. AR systems integrated into foreign language teaching materials are not AR-supported materials in the scientific sense. In order to use AR-assisted foreign language teaching effectively, three basic principles (multimedia learning principles, learning strategies principles and technical principles of AR) should be taken into consideration. In order for AR-supported foreign language education to be used widely and with the desired system competence, costly studies are necessary for groups working.
Since the end of the 1980s, intercultural learning has become one of the main objectives of foreign language teaching. Thus, intercultural learning contents and activities have been included in the concepts of foreign language textbooks and have become an indispensable element of foreign language teaching. Global, regional and regionalised textbooks are used in German language teaching. While global textbooks are often used at public schools, regional textbooks are used at state schools in Turkey. For the implementation of intercultural learning in the German language lesson, it is also important that teachers, as mediators of the foreign culture, are aware of the respective intercultural differences and their effects and are interculturally competent in this sense. In this study, an answer is sought to the question of whether the regional German language textbooks used in foreign language teaching at state grammar schools in Turkey are suitable for intercultural learning. Furthermore, the study also deals with the intercultural sensitivity of German language teachers. In this context, the regional textbooks "Mein Schlüssel zu Deutsch" and "Deutsch Macht Spaß" are analysed according to Renges' catalogue of criteria for intercultural learning. The intercultural sensitivity of German language teachers at public secondary schools was examined using the intercultural sensitivity questionnaire developed by Chen and Starosta.
In foreign language didactics, there is a tendency from a teacher-centered approach to a learner-centered and action-oriented learning process. In this respect, Classroom Interactional Competence (CIC) emerges as a key concept for foreign language teachers. In this context, German as a Foreign Language (GFL) teachers should be made aware of classroom interaction, teacher talk, specifically constructive vs. obstructive effects of interactional features during the field experience. This research reports on a case study that examined the effects of incorporating an approach into the practicum phase of eight prospective GFL teachers. The teachers were administered a questionnaire before and after the practicum to determine their perceptions regarding interactional features and the concept of CIC. Upon this, they received training on them through the SETT framework. Therefore, the study also investigated whether the training resulted in a change in their perceptions. For this reason, they wrote reflections at regular intervals. In addition, their reflections were collected through an evaluation form and interviews. Results indicate that the teacher candidates' interactional skills clearly improved over the course of the training in which interactional practices were reported to be used systematically. Accordingly, contributions to their professional development were seen in their evaluations and reflections. Furthermore, they made constructive suggestions for the re-planning of the field experience according to the SETT framework, which suggests that they are convinced of the necessity and usefulness of this training for the education of future foreign language teachers. Keywords: Interactional competence, GFL teacher education, interactional features, SETT-framework, professional development.

In the context of GFL teacher training in Turkey, access to pedagogical content knowledge is largely based on the competently handling of written academic text forms. In view of the fact that in Turkey, six of a total of sixteen GFL teacher training courses are taught in German, students in the German language courses face some difficulties when dealing with German academic texts and thus, need to develop their German academic text competence. Against this background, it can be seen that academic text competence is a key competence that significantly influences the quality of knowledge acquisition in the context of GFL teacher training. Despite this great importance, the current teaching practice in the GFL teacher training courses in Turkey shows that this competence is not systematically promoted in the classroom, but rather simply assumed. Based on this, a specially designed training model is presented, which is based on process-orientation approach and the procedures of the three stage model by Schmölzer-Eibinger (2008) to promote the academic text competence of prospective GFL teachers as part of the elective course "Academic German". In addition to this, a case study was carried out to empirically determine the effectiveness of process-oriented approach, which focused on the effect of this approach on the insights, perceptions and attributions of prospective GFL teachers as well as on the concrete influence of this approach on the realization of academic text competence. On the basis of an empirical analysis of focus groups, student essays and other questionnaires, it was possible to find out largely positive effects on the subjective perceptions of the students in addition to development in the quality of the student essays.

Grammar is no longer the primary aim in foreign language teaching, but a means of communicative situations. This pragmatics-based approach is reflected in foreign language teaching and textbooks. Speech acts play an important role in determining grammatical structures. These grammatical structures are treated with regard to their functions in the communication process. Aim of this work is to investigate the relationship between speech acts and grammar in local German textbooks for secondary level. The textbooks "Schritt für Schritt Deutsch A1.1", "Deutschkasten A1.2" and "Wie bitte? A2.1" are analyzed. The data is collected through the analysis of the textbooks and then compared with Profile German, which is developed as a reference framework for German as a foreign language. Based on the results, the relationship between speech acts and grammar in the local German textbooks is presented. In the textbooks "Schritt für Schritt Deutsch" and "Deutschkasten" it is found that the grammatical topics treated in certain communication situations are not suitable for this situation. Shortcomings regarding the expression of the speech acts and their order within the modules are noted. The data is obtained from the Profiles German catalog showed that the communication situations correspond to the most suitable grammatical topics. In the textbook "Wie bitte?" no information is found to speech acts. Grammar is in the foreground of this textbook. It is found that the grammatical topics are sometimes the topics of a higher level. Based upon the results, some suggestions have been stated to contribute the development of local textbooks.

This research is specifically significant as it proposes suggestions to the material developers and program designers for German L2 learners.
Kitaplardaki konuşma etkinlikleri Forster'in (1995) geliştirdiği aşamalar dikkate alınarak incelenmiş, elde edilen verilerin analizinde içerik çözümlemesi kullanılmıştır.
The practicum courses which combine theoretical knowledge and practice are of great importance for teacher education. Mentor teachers have a significant role in the effectiveness of practicum. This study aims to investigate the German language mentor teachers' competencies and validate them. To achieve this aim, a three-step Delphi technique was designed. The first step is for defining the competencies by means of open ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. This step consists of data collected from the experts, senior pre-service teachers and teacher trainers at universities. In the second step, a likert questionnaire is developed by using the previous findings and then it is sent to the expert group to be evaluated and to get their comments. In this second step, in order to see the agreement among experts, first quarter, last quarter, median, and range values for expert evaluations are calculated by means of descriptive statistics. In the last step, the questionnaire is sent to experts once again together with the statistical results specific for each item. In this step, the experts are required to revise their answers and finalize their decisions. Both qualitative and statistical data analysis techniques are used in the study. Reliability for the qualitative data is ensured through inter-rater reliability analysis. At the end of this study, 47 competence items that German teaching mentors should have are created. The competencies at hand are presented as a guide for selecting and training qualified mentor teachers in the process of pre-service German teachers' practicum. Keywords: mentor competencies, german teacher, delphi method, practicum, german teacher training
The objective of this study is to identify the frequency of strategy use for foreign language learning undertaken by turkish students while learning German. In this context, the study intended to identify the use of language learning strategies and to promote those strategies, which are less frequently used, in future learning processes. The present study has also undertaken a research into wether there are significant differences between variables and strategy use. In this regard, a study was carried out in the spring semester of the 2009-2010 academic year with 493 students from three different Anatolian High schools located Ankara. The data was collected through the Oxford (1990) SILL-Questionaire. The Manova variance analysis and t-tests were applied to identify the correlation between variables and strategy use. Based on the research findings, the frequency of strategy use by Turkish learners of German language is in the mediocre or in the high range and no critical meanness was found. The most frequently used strategies are social strategies and the least frequently used strategies are the affective strategies. As a result, the research concludes that Turkish learners of German language may prefer their language learning process in groups and with each other and on work focused more on communication. Emotional regulations, on the other hand, are less preferred or less necessary. The findings show that, the gender factor has a significant influence on the use of strategies. Accordingly, men use memory, cognitive, metacognitive and social strategies more frequently than women. In addition, it has been found that the use of strategy in the upper classes decrease and the learning experience in acquiring the first foreign language does not influence the strategy use while learning a second foreign language. The study discusses the research in light of other research results and makes suggestions for future research in the field.
Communication is an indispensable and important tool in all areas of human life. In times of rapid development and change in technology, communication and its content has changed dramatically in parallel with technological developments. Recent studies state that communication consists of percent verbal, 33 percent paraverbal and 55 percent nonverbal elements. The aim of this study is to examine the extent to which these are reflected in the textbooks planned for foreign language teaching. The present work is based on two research methods and has two objectives. The quantitative research method consists of a questionnaire with demographic information about teachers working at Ankara Goethe Institute and a five-level Likert-scale questionnaire. The survey measures the importance, function and frequency of use of videos in German foreign language (DaF) classes. In addition to this, non-verbal elements of communication in video clips and their functions for teachers are questioned. The second research method involves analyzing and evaluating non-linguistic elements of 24 video clips in the DaF textbook according to Constanze Kaiser. The table developed for each video clip contains the name of the clip, the purpose of the chapter, the content of the clip and the channels of non-verbal communication. Both in the survey study as well as in the analysis and evaluation of the video clips in the DaF textbook "Menschen A1" it became clear that the function and importance of videos generally did not find their place comprehensively. The results of the two studies will contribute to the creation of authentic videos in the books prepared for the DaF course.
It is known that different types of course books have been used in teaching German as foreign language courses. In addition to the German course books that are published in Germany and appeals to a large market, localized and totally local German course books produced in other countries are also used to teach German all over the world. The scientific research studies examining and investigating the local course books are scrutinized in the present study. Based upon the idea that course book analyses are as important as the quality of course books, this research is concerned about the primary studies that directly examine the local German course books. The literature review indicates that there are substantial number of studies, conducted both in Turkey and abroad, which explore the local German course books. This research aims to investigate the findings of these earlier studies by means of meta-synthesis. In this sense, identifying the most and the least frequently investigated features of German course books and the obtained results of the prior research on these course books are among the aims of this study. Accordingly, a systematic literature review was conducted in different databases and search engines, and 60 primary research studies held in Turkey and abroad between the years of 1986-2018, which meets the selection criteria, were included in this meta-synthesis. These 60 studies included in the research are about the findings of the analysis of 200 local German course books. At the end of the coding procedure the data listed under 11 themes were first synthesized among themselves, and then the synthesis findings about the themes and the subthemes were figured out by combining this first synthesis with the findings obtained through the evaluation of the studies on course books. At the end of this study, a set of suggestions to develop local German course books were provided based upon the findings of this research.
Characteristics of goods and services (the products) that are utilized for fulfilling the needs of the people are consistently changing due to the emergence of new and different markets alongside with the developments in technology and such change generally comes into existence with "the advertisement" of products. Since the advertisement is a laid emotive bridge between the customer and the product, the advertisement is one of the most important tools for business operators to introduce the product to the customer. The words that are used in the advertisements thereby consist the foundation of the aforesaid emotive bridge. The more the words in the advertisements are appealing and distinctive, the more it attracts the attention of the customer and deepens the emotive bond. Accordingly, the words utilized in the advertisement at the present time are mostly borrowed from nonnative languages that are perceived as popular and appealing (particularly from the English) and such nonnative originated words increase the emotive bond within the advertisement by proliferating in the native language. In this study by addressing the lexical borrowing from nonnative languages used in German and Turkish advertisements, it is aimed to identify the classes of loanwords and from which languages they are borrowed from. For this purpose, a study that includes tangible illustrations from magazines that are the elements of printed media and that consists of two sections were conducted being the theoretical and the practical. In the theoretical section respectively; i. the concept of "Advertisement" is handled with its historical background and features; ii. "Lexical borrowings" are evaluated in detail with their characteristics and word classes. In the practical section which is the most important part of the study, the loanwords used in advertisements in German and Turkish magazines are scrutinized. The etymologies of the loanwords are identified and after grouping them under language families they are additionally classified and listed according to their word classes. With the identified results, it is observed that cultural and geographical aspects are important in the utilization of such borrowed words. Key Words: Advertisement, the language of advertisement, lexical borrowings, loanword, foreign word, the origin of the word, word class
This master thesis will present the translation criticism on Turkish translations of Stefan Zweig's novella, "Angst". Initally, basic informations about the author and the translators will be given. Afterwards, four translations of Ercümend Ekrem Talu, Behçet Necatigil, Ilknur Igan and Burcu Uzunoğlu will be analyzed. These translations will first be separated into two phases, because the translation criticism will reshape according to the translation tendencies of the time period. The year that the translation was published will be considered while classifying. So, the first group will be the humanist era of 20th century (1940 - 1966), the second group will consist of the most recent translations of the 21st century. Afterwards, the translation criticism approach will accordingly be enlightened. Meanwhile, the translations within the eras will be compared with the source text. The purpose of this thesis is to form a translation critic through the source text and the four translations, yet the critics won't be labeled as 'right' or 'wrong' rather will reflect a general assessment.

Eventhough sign languages are a subject to dynamic developments as spoken languages are, the Turkish sign language studies are quite recent. Especially, Turkish sign language has not been studied enough in field terms of science of translation. It is aimed that this study will fill this gap, contribute to future studies in this field and locate the Turkish sign language on the academic domain of science of translation. In this study, Turkish and German sign languges are analized comparatively in the multidimensional translation domain. Firstly, the general similarities between two languages together, then cultural and spoken languages interactions are presented in samples. Secondly, information about the "Sign language Translation Education" programs in Turkey and Germany are provided and the programs are analized comparatively. On the other comparative analysis, it is assumed that "false friends" in the languages of the two countries, formed by the words of which meanings are completely or partially different, exist in sign languages as well, eventhough they are written or pronounced same/similarly. For this purpose, the "Turkish Sign Language Dictionary" on the website of the Turkish Language Society, published in 2015 by the support of Ministry of National Education and the "Contemporary Turkish Sign Language Dictionary" which is supported by the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, which is also presented on the internet, are used in this study. Words from those three dictionaries are compared with the German Sign Language Dictionary "Kestner" which has 19000 sign words presented on video format. Results of this analysis are assessed and compared with the questions, which are originated from the starting point of this study. It is thought that conducting such studies are important in terms of maintaining the cultural heritage as much as in terms of the Qualificaion of the Translators, Didactics and Teachers of the Turkish Sign Language.
