The relationship between leadership styles and organizational commitment among employees of ngos working in the Ethiopian-Somali region
The present study investigates the relationship between leadership styles and organizational commitment among employees working at NGOs in the Ethiopian Somali Region. An explanatory sequential mixed method has been used to disclose the dominant style and corresponding employees' organizational commitments. The responses from quantitative survey of 136 employees and supervisors working in 17 different NGOs and in-depth interviews held with 7 leaders have been used to illustrate results. The quantitative data were analyzed by using the SPSS 21 version software. Summaries of demographic characteristics and descriptive states of main variables of the study were obtained and then presented. Moreover, the researcher examined the directions and strengths the association among the study variables through correlation analyses with leadership styles representing the independent variables and employees' organizational commitment as a dependent variable. The qualitative data were examined through content analyses of the responses provided by the participants of the in-depth interviews and results obtained thereafter were presented in the form of direct quotation and explanatory interpretations. Employees in these organizations tend to perceive that their respective leaders were displaying more of transactional and laissez-faire than transformational behaviors. The preponderance of evidences from both quantitative survey and qualitative in-depth interviews establish the connection between the leadership styles and organizational commitment among employees working in these NGOs. Keywords: Transactional, transformational, laissez-faire leadership styles, employees' organizational commitments, NGOs, Ethiopian-Somali region.
Intractable conflicts and logic of attack: ungoverned spaces in Somalia and implication on national and regional security
The situation in Somalia has over the last three decades transformed rapidly from a domestic conflict into a regional security crisis characterized by terrorism, cross border kidnappings, human trafficking, piracy, migration and assassinations. While there is growing concern over the conflict's impact on the region, the humanitarian situation in the country which has seen the death of over half a million people and millions others displaced often overshadow academic research conducted in the region and preoccupy efforts of peace ambassadors. This thesis aims to examine how and why the situation in Somalia affects domestic and regional security in the Horn of Africa. The study adopts a qualitative study approach by interrogating official government reports, academic and media publications as well as documents from non -governmental organizations. It uses information from various conflict reporting databases to analyze the trend and actors involved in attacks within Somalia and the region. The thesis consists of six chapters, it begins by examining the Somalian conflict within the context of complexity and ungoverned space theories. In this chapter the methodology adopted in the study is also discussed in detail. The second chapter examines the clan configuration among Somali communities and the origins of 'soft -bond' networks which have shaped the nature of the conflict. The third chapter of the thesis explores the colonial and historical origins of instabilities in Somalia as well as the history of peace efforts and why they failed. In chapter four, I asses the complexity of the conflict in Somalia and discuss the logic of attack and the transformation of the conflict over the years. Chapter five discusses the implications of the Somalian conflict on national and regional security, while chapter six which is also the findings section discusses the nexus between the Somalian conflict and the socio -economic, political and cohesion aspects of the society. The study argues that the impact of the situation in Somalia on the region is aggravated by three issues often overlooked. One is the emergence of ungoverned spaces in the country that allows criminal groups to recruit, train and carry attacks within and outside the country. Second is the transformation of the conflict itself from a civil war into organized crime making the situation intractable. This has not only continued to pose serious security threats to Somalia and her neighboring countries but also undermined peace efforts as perpetuators of these criminal activities continue to benefit from the instability in the country. The third element that has made the conflict adopt a regional dimension is the perception of the involvement by regional countries in the crisis which continues to influence the logic of attack in the country. The study identifies these three issues as critical barriers to peace in the Horn of Africa.

Federalism in Somalia: Debates on the culture and the power distribution
This thesis examines whether Somalia is federal state or not, as well if the Somali government allows division of power to its member states. This thesis problematizes whether clan-based Somalia society with ethnic diversity appropriate federalism, departing from the concepts of division of power, between the central government and federal states. Therefore, this study looks at how the institutions function politically, by recalling all previously written literatures and the necessary sources, such as, articles, books. Somalia embraced federalism officially in 2012, but had practiced since 2000 by different transitional governments. The objective of this research is to question to what limits federalism is operated in Somalia, then study and discuss how culture and society in Somalia find a place in federalism, so the main questions of this thesis are. Is Somalia a federal state? Is Somalia adopting division of power? Finally, the research will also bring up the discussion on federalism with a society with tribal and ethnic diversity in the continent of Africa. Numerous countries operate federalism such as Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda, Ethiopia in Africa. These countries achieved to practice federalism to some extent, for instance division of power, giving some power to member states, provided social compatibility, functioned with their institutional organization.
Bu bağlamda tezin çalışılmasındaki amaç, önce uluslararası hukukta deniz haydutluğu tanımının tarihsel süreç içinde gelişimini ortaya koymak, deniz haydutluğunun önlenmesi yöntemlerini belirlemek, Somali açıklarıyla Aden Körfezi'ndeki deniz haydutluğunun ortaya çıkış nedenlerini tespit ederek bölgedeki eylemlerin uluslararası topluma etkisinin boyutunu analiz etmek ve uluslararası hukuk çerçevesinde deniz haydutluğu eylemlerinin Aden Körfezi'nde önlenmesini incelemektir.
Etiyopya ve Somali her daim birbirine düşman olmuş, iki ülke hiçbir zaman aralarında barışçıl, karşılıklı dayanışma üzerine kurulu, dostane ilişkiler kuramamıştır. İki ülke arasındaki düşmanlığın tarihi 16. Yüzyıla, Osmanlı'nın Hristiyan Habeşistan Krallığı'na karşı savaş veren Somali Adal Sultanlığı'nı desteklemesine dek uzanır. Somali merkezi hükümetinin çökmesinden ve bölgedeki dengesizlikten istifade eden Etiyopya 1991'den beri Somali'deki farklı muhalif grupların yol açtığı riskleri minimize etmek veya Somali'yi istikrarsızlaştırmak için farklı yollara başvurmak suretiyle Somali'nin içişlerine sürekli karışmaktadır. Etiyopya Somali'de oluşan yeni statükoyu korumak amacıyla bu ülkeye birçok kez müdahalede bulunmuştur. Bu çalışma, Etiyopya'nın 1991-2017 arası dönemde Somali'ye yönelik dış politikasının bu ülke üzerindeki etkisini incelemektedir. Dört bölüm hâlinde kaleme alınan çalışmaya üç temel amaç yön vermektedir: Etiyopya'nın Somali'ye yönelik dış politikasının ve Somali'nin barış süreci üzerindeki etkilerinin tespit edilmesi; Etiyopya'nın Somali'ye yönelik dış politikasına yön veren faktörlerin tanımlanması; ve Etiyopya'nin Somali'ye müdahalesinin ve islamci militanlara karşi mücadelesinin analiz edilmesi.
Socio-cultural adaptation of Somali immigrants in Ankara and Istanbul
Turkey is one of the countries of preference of immigration for Somali people who leave their country due to security issues, political instability, and economic difficulties arising out of the ongoing civil war and conflicts since the 1990s, as well as drought and concern for the future. After the then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the accompanying important delegation's visit to Somalia on 19 August 2011, a new period of closer relations started between the two countries. Although there are studies in the relevant academic literature that focus on the Somali people around the themes of civil war, security, terrorism, education, and religion, there is only a few to no studies that investigate the adaptation processes of Somali people particularly regarding their perceptions and experiences in social life. The relevant literature lacks any study that focuses on the opinions and perceptions of Somali immigrants who willingly go to Ankara and Istanbul through official channels and maintain their lives in Turkey. This study is important since it is the first scholarly endeavor on the subject topic. In this study, the perceptions of the Somali immigrants, who live in Ankara and Istanbul, on their socio-cultural adaptation and the characteristics that they consider to be similar to and different from the characteristics of the Turkish society are examined by employing in-depth interviews and qualitative methods. At the same time, this study has inquired what importance religious and social values, cultural norms, historical ties, education, age, social capital, and networks have on the Somali immigrants' adaption to the host country. In this context, this study draws both on an analytical assessment of scholarly works on the subject and on findings obtained through in-depth interviews and participant observation as part of the fieldwork. In the fieldwork stage of the study, in-depth interviews were held with 2 high-level diplomatic representatives, who had detailed information and experience on the subject, and 35 Somali immigrants. In the fieldwork conducted, examples were identified based on the Somali participants opinions and life experiences. In this regard, various social policy implications are recommended concerning the shortcomings and issues identified, through a select sample of cases, in the socio-cultural adaptation process to the Turkish society.
Covid-19 and microfinance institutions in Somalia challenges and practical solutions
Microfinance refers to a small loan, insurance and savings which is mainly granted to people with a low income in extreme poverty in order improve their lives and alleviate poverty in the community. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how Covid-19 has impacted the microfinance institutions in Somalia and what was the major challenges they had faced since the onset of Covid-19 pandemic. Both qualitative and quantitative methodology has been used through conducting a case study in Mogadishu and Hargeisa. The data was collected through a questionnaire distributed to the Somalian microfinance institutions in 2022. The results showed that Covid-19 has had a moderate impact on MFIs. It had also found that most MFIs witnessed high credit risk and an increase in savings withdrawals. In addition, MFIs had faced many financial and operational challenges including difficulties in meeting clients in the offices, disbursing loans, default of loans, increase in non-performing assets, declining profits, financial crisis, and many other challenges. To overcome these challenges, the thesis found that MFIs have to diversify their financial portfolios, improve the digital innovation, reschedule loans, seek government assistance, and increase investments in different sectors in order to mitigate the impacts of the Covid-19 crisis. Key terms of the research: Covid-19, Microfinance Institutions, Somalia, Challenges, Solutions.
Islamic banks in somalia: Issues, practical solutions and opporunities
Islamic Banking is a system in which finance is contributed in the form of money in return for equity or rights to a portion of future firm earnings, or in the form of products and services offered in exchange for a pledge to repay their value at a later date. Unlike conventional finance, Islamic finance is based on five fundamental pillars: the prohibition of interest, the prohibition of uncertainty, the prohibition of gambling, profit and loss sharing, and the requirement that all financial transactions are underlying physical assets. The study's objective is to analyze the challenges and opportunities confronting the Somali Islamic banking industry. The study also intends to focus on a number of the main issues impeding the expansion of Islamic banking within the country and suggest several potential solutions. Primary data are collected by the survey conducted in the study and analyzed with the Stata program. Our study's target population comprised Islamic Bank employees in Somalia in order to develop a broad understanding of the causes and patterns of issues and opportunities of Islamic banks in Somalia. Moreover, research papers, textbooks, websites, and unpublished thesis were used to get additional information related to the topic. According to the survey findings, it came out that Somalia's Islamic banks have not yet reached their full potential. Among the issues raised by the employees was the lack of cohesive SSB that deals with all banking issues such as Fatwas and other necessary laws, a shortage of professional employees with a better understanding of technology, and other project management. Other significant issues were lack of awareness among the society, regulative issues, high pricing finance, lack of Islamic insurance, low rate of return, lack of R&D, competition from mobile companies, shortage of market information, and lack of connection with global banks. Finally, the most significant risk issues raised by the employees were credit risk, liquidity risk, rate of return risk, collateral risk, and foreign exchange risk. On the contrary, findings indicate that Islamic banking has a significant opportunity in Somalia because the Somali community's acceptance of Islamic banking is higher than conventional banks.
The role of remittances in state rebuilding: The case study of Somalia
This study investigates the role of remittances in the state rebuilding of Somalia. The volume of remittances going into the Somali economy is massive, yet little is known about their contribution to the country's reconstruction. Remittances can impact state fragility, and state building. Somalia is known globally to have been the world's most failed state. For instance, the Fund for Peace fragility index places Somalia at 110.5 points while the World Bank's CPIA places Somalia at 2.0 points. State-building indicators, including economic, social equity, public services, and judicial and political functions, have been absent or weak in Somalia. However, they have been created or strengthened thanks to remittances. Therefore, gaining an in-depth understanding of their involvement with this phenomenon is crucial. This thesis seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What role do remittances play in the state rebuilding of Somalia? 2. How is the government benefiting from the remittances flow to the country? 3. How are remittances used to build civil society institutions that collaborate with the state in rebuilding? Drawing on a purposive approach, this study is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with people rich in information on Somali affairs, academics, Hawala companies, families who receive remittances, and the Somali diaspora communities who send money back to Somalia and the relevant secondary data. Despite the increase in recent research on the effects of remittances in Somalia, a critical gap remains. The impact of remittances in the state rebuilding of Somalia is yet to be adequately addressed. While research on remittances in household expenditure, social development, education, poverty alleviation, and Hawala firms has been conducted, little has been done, especially on state and institution construction. Somalia has been without a government for the longest time in history, and the current federal government is fragile with weak institutions. Millions of Somalis live abroad, contributing significantly to the positive development of their home country through financial remittances of about $1,735 billion and social remittances in ways that merit in-depth academic analysis; thus, this study aims to bridge this gap and contribute towards these efforts by analyzing the impact of remittances and social networks on Somalia's state rebuilding processes. I argue that remittance flow impacts the state-building processes of Somalia through institution-building such as education, civil society, health, and economics. The study finds that remittances positively impact state building through the development of the healthcare system, educational institutions, roads, legal system, civil society organizations, and the country's literacy rate.
Interest-free banking: Challenges, opportunities and prospects in Somalia

Turkey's "Benevolent expansion" in Somalia: Development gifts and power resources of an emerging country
This dissertation analyzes Turkey-Somalia development partnership from a comparative historical and relational perspective, while addressing gift theories to interpret Turkey's aid politics. Emerging donors introduce new discourses, practices, and institutions into international aid architecture, and they are assumed to be transforming North-South hierarchies. Turkey has gained an emerging donor reputation and Somalia is the most comprehensive example to analyze Turkey's changing aid politics. I argue that aid modalities change historically, but states use foreign aid to expand their power resources. I compare post-colonial Italian development aid, Cold War Soviet military aid, and Turkey's humanitarian aid to post-state collapse Somalia. I question the relation between donor states' expansionist interests and their aid politics. After the World War 2, former colonist Italy used development aid to restore its plantations, to monopolize Somali banana trade, and hence to actualize a neo-imperial expansion. During the Cold War, the USSR wanted to counterbalance the US presence in Ethiopia, and provided arms to Somalia to access its naval facilities; thus, Moscow achieved a geopolitical expansion through military aid. After two decades from Somalia's destructive 1991 civil war, Turkey responded to the country's severe drought crisis with a humanitarian intervention in 2011, and humanitarian aid created an unexpected opportunity for an emerging country to accumulate power resources in a "failed state." To compare Turkey's aid politics to Italian and Soviet aid regimes, I question the relation between humanitarian aid and material gains. I establish that Turkey's state-led aid campaign incorporated foreign policy interest, the humanitarian imperative, and Islamic charity ethics. Based on parliamentary archives between 2002-2015, I show that Turkey's AKP government firstly approached Somalia to leverage its regional leadership claims, but later 2011 humanitarian aid campaign discursively concealed Turkey's foreign policy objectives with a compassionate rhetoric of saving lives. Relying on expert interviews conducted with Turkey's official and faith-based NGO actors, I establish that Islamic ethics and nationalist aspirations informed the making of aid projects, where charity and foreign policy concerns blended disinterested and self-interested motives. By addressing theories on gift exchange, I define Turkey's aid politics as a "benevolent expansion". In the last chapter, I interpret Somali community's positive and negative responses toward Turkey's endeavors through in-depth interviews conducted with Somali scholarship students, entrepreneurs, and academics in Turkey and elsewhere. Turkey's scholarship programs triggered a student migration, and graduates initiated diasporic networks in Turkey. I conclude that access to economic gains determines the perception of transnational Somali community toward Turkey either as a win-win partner or as a foreign actor accumulating unequal benefits.
Turkey as a state-building actor in Somalia: A comparison of Turkey and other actors
The study intended to investigate and understand Turkey's overall role in Somalia's state-building process. Furthermore, the study sought to demonstrate the state-building approach employed by the Turkish policy-makers and analyze how it differs from other actors involved in Somalia. In addition, the study aimed to study Turkey's overall foreign policy towards Africa and Somalia. Specifically, this dissertation aimed to investigate and discuss differences and similarities among state-building approaches used by the Turkish government and other regional and international actors involved in the Somalia state-building process. Therefore, the study utilized primary and secondary data, and consultations and semi-structured interviews were conducted with policymakers and academicians. The study found that Turkey's recent engagement in Somalia in 2011 marked a new era of Turkish-African relations. Given the fact that this relationship has been growing in strength since 1998. The study demonstrates that Turkey's foreign policy toward Somalia is inextricably linked to its overall engagement with the continent. The findings show that both Turkey and other actors have contributed to humanitarian and state-building projects in Somalia. However, the crucial distinction is the approach and engagement method. The study argues that the comprehensive approach that integrated humanitarian, development assistance, and security aid at a critical time significantly impacted the fate of Somalia's state-building process. This dissertation posits that Turkey's approach to state formation in Somalia differs from other traditional actors. It reveals that Turkey's comprehensive approach has widely covered education, health, economic infrastructure, and development projects that have improved the well-being of the society. In addition to rebuilding the army, political support through diplomatic channels and peacebuilding through mediation were other key factors that contributed to Somalia's state-building efforts. This dissertation serves as a snapshot of state-building programs sponsored by the international community using the context of Somalia. Its findings may help better understand why specific state-building projects fail and why others thrive. The results may also be valuable to future state-building initiatives to avoid repeating the same mistakes made in Somalia, and therefore urges that future state-building projects use a comprehensive approach.
Determinants of export performance in Somalia
Somalia's economy categorized by the old-style sector and the little modern urban industry generates its trade flow. Agriculture is an important sector of the economy. It contributes more than 65 per cent of the national GDP and creates many employees in the workforce. However, Somalia's export sector is very fragile and not functioning well. The general objective of the study is to discover the determinants of export performance in Somalia. This paper summarizes the determinants of export performance in Somalia by using secondary time series data in a range of periods from 1991 to 2020 for different sources such as world development indicators and SESRIC. This study applied an econometric model through multiple regression analysis based on Ordinary Least Square method (OLS). Simultaneously, to test a long-term relationship, we used the cointegration test. Conversely, the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillip-Perron (PP) tests used to check the stationarity of the data. The results show the significant and positive effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on export performance; similarly official development assistance (ODA) and gross domestic product (GDP) have a positive impact on export performance. In contrast, the inflation rate and labor force variables have a negligible and negative impact on export performance in Somalia. Keywords: FDI, GDP, Export, Agriculture, Somalia
The strategic interest of Turkey's foreign policy in Somalia
The purpose of this study is to examine and determine the Turkish engagement in Somalia particularly, the strategic interest of Turkey's foreign policy in Somalia. Since 2011, the Turkish government has taken important steps to increase its diplomatic, and political relations with Somalia as soft power diplomacy in the direction of '1998 African Action Plan'. Since then, the Horn of Africa become a power struggle ground for the countries of the Middle East like Turkey, Iran, Israel and Gulf countries. This renewed interest is due to the regions strategic and geopolitical importance that resulted in today's scramble for influence among these countries which are driven by both geo-security and geo-economic imperatives. For that reasons, the Turkish foreign policy makers have begun to develop new strategies that shifted from a one-sided foreign policy to a multi-faceted foreign policy in Somalia. However, this study examines the strategic interest of Turkey's foreign policy in Somalia particularly, the new economic and security policy in Mogadishu. The first chapter of the study, covers the literature review of the study, including the key concepts, and the key arguments of Turkey's engagement in Somalia. The second chapter deals with Turkish foreign policy in Africa, particularly Somalia because Turkey's policy in Somalia is intertwined with Turkish general policy in Africa. The third chapter, discusses and analyses Turkey's strategic interest in Somalia, by providing insight into the actions of Turkey's security, economic and geopolitical interests like Turkey's military base in Mogadishu and its investment in some parts of Somalia. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used to carry out the study.
