Abstract (EN)
Recently, the population of the world and also the tendency to live in urban areas are growing in a rapid way so, there is an ever greater need to build more civil structures such as high-rise buildings, bridges, dams, ports, towers, and other facilities. Sometimes these structures should be built near or on slopes for any reason like architecture or need for existence of a particular building on or near slope. One of the most essential components of any structure is the foundation that has the primary role of transferring the loads produced by the weight of structure to the underlying foundation soil. When structures are built on slopes or near them the stability of slope and also stability of the structure itself, need to be considered. The behavior of foundations on slope and also evaluation of the behavior of the super structure are another issues that have to be taken into account. Generally, the aim of the thesis is to evaluate the behavior of slopes and foundations and superstructures on or near slopes during earthquake. Turkey is located in a region which has a great potential of earthquake. There are a lot of slopes in this region which always have the contingency of being instable by effect of ground motion. Elazığ earthquake and the region that was affected by this ground motion have been selected as the case study in this thesis. The main objective of this thesis is to study 2010 Elazığ earthquake and see how it has affected the slopes at this zone. One of the most noteworthy earthquake incident in Turkey is 1999 Kocaeli earthquake. The ground motion record of this earthquake is used in the analyses to study the effect of a stronger earthquake in the Elazığ region. The geology of the damaged area has been discussed and the incident of Elazığ earthquake is explained. The models have been created based on the real soil data, available from the affected area. The soil model parameters have been obtained from available soil data and some of them are calculated based on estimations by using correlations proposed by wellknown researchers. PLAXIS 2012 finite element program and GeoStudio 2012 software have been used for performing dynamic and static analysis. Several analysis have been performed to evaluate different conditions in the area, like existence of a building on slope or the effect of ground water table in the affected zone. Then the results have been compared to each other in order to help us have a beter understanding of the area.
