An examination of the 2018 social studies curriculum and the 4th grade social studies textbook in terms of social skills

Social relations are of great importance in the healthy presence of people, who are part of the society, in the life of the society. Social skills, which are among the factors that will ensure the healthy progress of interpersonal social relations, need to be acquired by people. In this context, the research aims to reveal the effectiveness of textbooks, one of the important materials used by students in primary school, in gaining these skills. The research question was determined as the examination of the 2018 Social Studies Curriculum and the primary school 4th grade Social Studies textbook prepared in line with this program in the 2021-2022 academic year in terms of social skills. In the collection of research data, a document review approach was used, which allows the review of materials that provide evidence about the facts and events planned to be examined in the research. The data obtained through document review were analyzed with a descriptive approach. In line with the findings, one of the skills included in the social skills scope of the 4th grade social studies textbook, which was prepared in line with the special objectives, basic skills, values education, learning areas, 4th grade achievements and acquisitions in the program, is related to the text, visuals, activities and questions. most; While the first skills to be acquired include the skills to carry out a task with a group, planning and problem-solving skills, it has also been observed that the skills for emotions and coping with aggressive behaviors are also included. In addition, it was determined that the skills of coping with stress situations were not included.
