Effect of dynamic abilities and governance level on growth performance through social capital in family businesses

Family businesses have a big influence in the world economy and our country. Their ability to sustain their activities, be open to innovations, adapt themselves to rapidly changing global markets and have competitive power is therefore important for our country. The existence of so many studies on family businesses in the literature also endorses their importance. With this approach, it is hereby in this doctorate study analyzed to what extent the dynamic abilities and governance levels of family businesses located in the Marmara Region, operating in six different sectors influence their growth performance through social capital. In the literature, the effects of dynamic abilities and governance levels on growth performance were analyzed in studies carried out in many different sectors. However, it was seen that there isn't any study carried out in Marmara Region, covering the sectors we determined and considering the intermediary effect of social capital. The Objective of this study is to guide those to study on family businesses and firms operating in this sector as well as to close up a gap in the literature in this field In the study, data were collected from participants by means of a questionnaire using cross-sectional scanning method of quantitative research approaches. For the study, 389 people being senior/ middle managers or members of board of directors of the companies participated in the questionnaire. Reliability analyses, factor analyses, correlation, regression and structural equation modeling were performed using IBM SPSS and AMOS data processing programs and an analysis on to what extent dynamic abilities, governance levels and social capital have both direct and intermediary effect on growth performance was performed. As a result of the analysis, it was observed that governance level has partial effect on growth performance while dynamic abilities and social capital has no positive effect on the same. Moreover, social capital doesn't have an intermediary effect but also has a negative relationship with growth performance. It is suggested that reaching different conclusions in this study than those in the literature indicates genuineness of the study and therefore it will contribute to further studies in this field.
