Abstract (EN)
Introduction: The role of free oxygen radicals in the onset and progression of acute pancreatitis has been demonstrated by recent studies. As a result of mechanisms related to free oxygen radicals production, the increase in intracellular oxidation reduction balance in favor of oxidation is often defined as biochemical oxidative stress. Thiol / disulfide homeostasis is a new indicator of oxidative stress. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the balance of thiol / disulfide in acute pancreatitis and to investigate whether the correlation of the Ranson score and the thiol / disulfide balance was statistically significant. Material and Method: The study included 77 patients who were admitted to the emergency department between 1 October 2017 and 1 August 2018 and were diagnosed as acute pancreatitis and 58 healthy controls were included in the study. Patient files were retrospectively reviewed. Age, gender, complete blood count, biochemistry, feroxidase and thiol disulfide values and neutrophil lymphocyte ratios were recorded. The Ranson scores at the time of admission were calculated. Results: 53.2% (n = 41) of the patient group and 53.4% (n = 31) of the control group are female. The average age of the patient group is 57 years and the average age of the control group is 61 years. In the patient group, the levels of native thiol, total thiol and ferroxidase were found to be significantly lower than the control group (p values <0.001; <0.001; <0.010, respectively). There was a weak negative correlation of total thiol with Ranson score. Conclusion: Native thiol, total thiol and ferroxidase levels were significantly lower in patients. It was concluded that there was a weak negative correlation between Ranson score and total thiol. Thus, it was concluded that oxidant / antioxidant balance is impaired in acute pancreatitis patients and this correlates with prognosis predicting Ranson score. Since there are few studies in the literature, this issue can be investigated in more detail with more comprehensive studies.
