The effect of education given to the mothers of children with allergic asthma on asthma control

Allergic asthma has become a chronic disease that threatens childhood. Symptoms of most asthma sufferes begin childhood and are the most common allergy induced asthma. Since mothers are the primary caregivers of children, education of mothers is of great importence in the control of childhood allergic asthma. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of education given to mothers of children with allergic asthma aged 4-11 years on asthma control. Data were colllected from 01.06.2022 to 30.08.2022 and patients with allergic asthma were randomized into the experimental group (n=38) and control group (n=38). Personal Information Form, Asthma Control Test, And Asthma Knowledge Level Questionnaire were used as pre-tests in the groups. Four interviews were planned with the experimental group, with an interval of two weeks. In the second interview of the experimental group, asthma training was carried out once in the form of a presentation presented using the motivationel interview teknique, while the control group was routinely informed. All post-test groups asthma control test measurement and chıldhood asthma knowledge level quastıonnaire were applied to the patients again. The pre-education asthma control level of children with allergic asthma in the experimental group was % 5,3, while the pre-education asthma control level of the control group was %10,5. The post-training asthma control level of the experimental group was %65,8. There was no difference in asthma control scores before training between the experimental and control groups (p= 0.587). A significant difference was found between the asthma control levels before the education and the asthma control levels after the education of the children with allergic asthma in the experimental group (p<0,001). In addition, a significant difference was found between the asthma knowledge levels of the experimental group before and after the education (p<0.001). A significant difference was found between the experimental and control groups in the post-training asthma control score and asthma knowledge score (p<0,001). As a result, it was determined that asthma knowledge level of mothers and asthma control levels of chıldren increased after allergic asthma education given to mothers of children with allergic asthma. In addition to treatments in childhood allergic asthma, environmental control and education of parents, especially mothers , are of great importance in the control of the disease. It has been concluded that the training given by nurses to mothers of children with allergic asthma has a positively effect on asthma control in children and the level of asthma knowledge of their caregivers. Asthma knowledge and asthma control levels can be increased by planing trainings for mothers of chıldren with allergic asthma.
