The effects of backing track accompained piano studies on student performance and attitudes

In piano teaching, various etudes are applied to acquire technical skills. The purpose of the research is to investigate the effect of supporting these etudes with technological tools on piano learning. For this purpose, an experimental design with a pretest, posttest control group was used to see the effect of the etudes studied with the backing track on the attitude and performance of 30 music department students studying at Avni Akyol Fine Arts High School in the 2023-2024 academic year. Both groups were determined on a voluntary basis. The 30-item attitude scale developed by Tufan and Güdek (2008) was applied to these two groups as pretest and posttest. In order to measure the effect of the students on their performance, the grades they received from the practice exams before and after the method were accepted as performance evaluation data. During the experimental process, a music software program called Cubase was used for the backing track accompaniment of Czerny etudes determined by experts and divided into levels for four weeks, and these studies were continued with the experimental group. Studies were conducted with the students in the control group using the traditional method. According to Mann Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-rank test analysis of the data; It was determined that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group. The results show that there is a significant difference in the satisfaction sub-dimension and performance scores of the students' attitude scores of piano etudes accompanied by backing track.
