Özet (EN)
The number of international students' enrollment is increasing each year and turning the world into a global village. These students share great experiences of studying in new environment however these experiences are accompanied with some issues also. This correlational and descriptive research has twofold; the first one understands the extent to which self-esteem, resilience, positive affect and negative affect predict culture shock in international students at BAU. Second, to examine the group differences with respect to gender, educational level, living style and interaction with Turkish people. The sample group consists of international students (N=302) currently studying at Bahcesehir University. The sample was reached face to face, through official university emails and whatsapp groups. All participants of the study were required to fill an online questionnaire that consisted of a consent form, demographic information form, Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES), Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 10), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and Culture Shock questionnaire. The current study concluded that culture shock was predicted 16% (R=.42, R2=.16, p<.05), by self-esteem, Resilience, positive affect and negative affect. Differences with respect to gender, living style and communication were found. Males had higher levels of culture shock, resilience and positive affect than females. On the other hand, females had higher levels of Negative affect than males. Students who lived with a family member scored low levels of self-esteem, positive affect and higher levels of culture shock than students who lived without family. There was no significant difference found between students living with or without family regarding resilience and negative affect. Students who had been in contact with Turkish people had higher levels of culture shock, resilience, positive affect and lower levels of negative affect than those who were less in touch with Turkish people. Keywords: Self-Esteem (SE), Resilience, Positive Affect (PA), Negative Affect (NA), Culture Shock (CS).
